He was /fantastic/. In case you were wondering.

Of course, I had no idea that when it said that Brian Wilson was opening, it meant that every single hit the Beach Boys had ever made would be sang by a man who acted more like an overweight automaton than a performer, but I will cut them some slack. Whoever 'they' are. Because of Paul.

Now, perhaps I'm biased, but I don't think so, and if I am, I certainly wasn't alone. The crowd was a little more varied than I'd expected, with less older people and more young hippies. (I digress, mmmm, young hippie girls...) Everyone loved Paul. He came back for four or five encores of two to three songs apiece. He sang new Paul. He sang old Paul. He sang in-between Paul. He sang Simon & Garfunkel. He smiled the whole time. It is readily apparent that he absolutely loves what he does. It shows.

So what did he sing? Well, Graceland, You Can Call Me Al, The Obvious Child, Me & Julio, Homeward Bound, Mrs. Robinson, The Boxer, I Am A Rock, Loves Me Like A Rock, Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes, Boy In The Bubble, Sounds of Silence, Late In The Evening, and oh, so many more that I can't remember. He played for about two solid hours. It was wonderful.

Me & Julio made me miss Baga, of course. He would have danced with me, perhaps, like we had on many past occasions, most of them intoxicated. Homeward Bound, of course, made me sniffle for Jess Chevrette and the mix tape I made for her in grade 10 when she moved away to Virginia. He didn't play Cecilia, which was surprising, or Born At The Right Time, which I would have loved to have heard live.

I even ran into two people I knew, which was pretty amazing, seeing as I thought that the few people I like here would like Paul enough to pay amphitheatre prices. Beck and Melissa won tickets on NPR, which was cool. Very cool.

Thank you, Paul. I was in grade 7 when I heard S&G's Greatest Hits, and I've loved you ever since. 14 years later, you still wow me muchly. Thanks for everything.
