Hello from Rhode Island!
Dec. 24th, 2001 11:22 am[Note: This computer has crashed the last two times I've tried to do this. I will likely not try a third time.]
Travel Update: Airport was a mobscene, even in Columbus and even at 5:30am or so. I ran into
happy2beso and was able to help her out by standing in her place and pointing her to the e-ticket check-in machines. Thanks to the machines at the Continental counter, I checked in in about 8 minutes and was not freaking out like a lot of passengers. I was about 30 minutes delayed coming out of Newark due to gate changes and other Newark-stuff, but we made good time on the flight and only landed about 15 minutes late. Not too shabby. I saw the Manhattan skyline from one of the big windows at Newark and I called Princess, but alas, no answer. That night I got to talk to
rizzo41, but she was in Maine, not New York, and I was bummed because my plans to go hang out with her got thwarted by this Dad stuff.
Important Fatherly Update: Dad is doing well. Or, as well as someone who had a heart attack and a triple bypass can do, really. He seems to be in good spirits and is just trying to get better. He's enjoying visitors but so many people are coming that it's hard for him to rest and all of that. I've seen him three times, twice on Saturday and once yesterday. Because he needs to quit smoking (and is determined to do so, yay!), I am in the process of trying to clean out his entire house to get the smoky smell out. However, I have absolutely no idea where to begin, and it seems to be a very overwhelming and daunting task. I'm sitting here just, like, not knowing where to start. Ugh. But he's doing well, and I will find time to go see him today before I head to Mom's for Christmas Eve stuff.
Haircut Update: Unfortunately not nearly as eventful as I would have liked. Grandma made /no/ rude comments or derisive remarks. SHOCKING! When she first saw it, she gave me a big hug and said in a pleasant tone, "Oh, I have a little boy." (That made me smile.) Later, I tried to incite trouble. I said to her, "Wow. My dad has longer hair than I do." She quickly responded, "Your father has longer hair than you and your brother put together." Dad joked about the hair but really liked the Industrial. No one else has said anything, really. There's still hope for mom! I want a scandal, dammit!
Industrial Update: Healing very nicely. I can bump it without trouble, now, and the last bit of infection is gone. YAY! This healed SO much faster than the conch. I'm impressed.
Ex-boyfriend Update: Last night I hung out with a boy that I dated in 11th Grade and hadn't seen since I was a senior in high school. It, remarkably, went much better than I'd anticipated. He's a smart guy and I really like hearing his opinions and philosophies on things. It's just the part where it seems that he thinks he's smarter than anyone else that used to grate on me, but I didn't notice a heck of a lot of that last night. We hung out at his apartment and chatted for a little bit, and then went to this boy Jay's apartment. I hadn't seen Jay since he was 14 and now he's nearly 25. Craziness. Still, I liked Jay then, when he was a freshman and I was a junior, and he was funny now. I saw a movie called "Happiness" which was just nuts. There was semen involved, and it was a headtrip. I think I'm still processing. However, I found out where my Michael Stipe "Happiness" MP3 comes from. Heh. The song is tainted now. Scott gave me a copy of Douglas Coupland's Generation X (which made me think of
binkiegirl, my resident Coupland nut) that I will try to read soon.
Bostonian Friends Update: Carrie and Jenn
siercia came down to visit and they brought the Widget, who is so big and so adorable (8 months). We chatted for a long while (with my grandparents always thinking Widget was a boy) and then went and tooled around a strip mall and then had pizza. My god, that is /so/ Woonsocket. This town bites.
Today's agenda is to start on cleaning my dad's place. I have Windex and I'm going to start with everything that's made of glass in this apartment, including windows. Once that's done, I'll go to Grandma's and get some furniture polish (preferably the lemon-scented kind) and I'll do all the furniture. This should take me well into time to get ready for Mom's. Throughout the week I'll try to wash all of his bedding and stuff like that. *sigh* It's daunting.
Thanks to
kieron and
ennuiennui for calling me and worrying about me and being my friends. I [heart] you both.

Date: 2001-12-24 09:39 am (UTC)Second is go to the grocery store and get a good anti-tobacco air freshener. There is one (can't remember the brand name) that REALLY works. Get a carpet sprinkle thing if they have carpet or rugs.
Open up the windows for as long as you can stand (5 minutes is enough!) to change out the stale air.
If there's still lingering smokiness, try burning incense or using an essential oil burner to infuse a stronger smell over it. This is the least reliable but can work for the last whiffs that nothing has been able to conquer.

Date: 2001-12-26 03:54 pm (UTC)It stinks. But it's good for most wood. (OK test before using on expensive finishes, yada yada). It stinks, but it cleans.
