The Absolute Perfect Day.
Dec. 28th, 2001 12:57 amI had one of the absolute best days of my life today. It was completely amazing and I can't stop smiling about it. I totally needed this. I could say a whole lot of things that are incredibly giggle-worthy when I think about them, but if I tried to tell them, they wouldn't sound very funny at all. Trust me, though, they are. Here is a summary:
1. Luke!
2. Messiah Village!
3. Yummy Vietnamese Food!
4. Moxie!
5. Great chocolate and a smurf!
6. A Beautiful Mind
7. The Border Cafe! Crescent City Catfish!
8. Wonderful hugs.
Here is the longer version:
Luke called around 10:30 and said that yes, he did indeed want to hang out. I was, as I wrote earlier, ecstatic. I ran home to shower and do stuff around the house, and he arrived around noon. I gave him a Smurf Wacky Wobbler and he gave me this thing called "Spooky the Thing What Squeeks." It is so adorable. You should all get one. So I gave him a big excited hug and then we were off to Boston!
First on the agenda was to go drive by Messiah Village ("We don't live with our moms."). This is the big old house in Mission Hill in Roxbury where Luke and a bunch of the cDc people (and some goths) used to live. I have lots of really fun and crazy memories from there, and most of them involve mind-altering substances. So we drove by, and someone was really doing a bunch of work on the house (though not a great job, heh). We saw someone looking out the window so we waved and he came out. This guy Mike who owns the house now took us inside so we could see it again (this is funny because on the radio a few minutes before was the BNL song about "The Old Apartment"). He still had the sticker on the door that said, "Messiah Village: We don't live with our moms" and some of the wacky things that were painted were still on the walls. The shower still said, "No one is looking. Go ahead. Touch yourself." He did, however, paint over the smurf and smurfy mushrooms I'd drawn on the walls during the "We're getting evicted" party. Phooey! Mike showed us pictures of the house from when it was built in 1868 and he showed us some information he got about the house from the Historical Society, so it was really cool. We spent about an hour there.
From there, we went up to Allston to have some yummy Vietnamese food for Luke's birthday tomorrow. The place he wanted to go to was closed, so we had to go across the street. On the walk back to the car, Luke wanted a beverage so we went into a convenience store and I got a bottle of Moxie (YAY!) which is my favoritest soda and you can only get it in the Boston area. Mmmmm, Moxie. We got back in the car and drove aimlessly before deciding to see a movie, so we headed to Harvard Square.
The movie didn't start until 6:45, so we had time to kill. We went into Wordsworth to look at books and toys and then across the street to the overpriced candy store. Luke bought yummy European chocolate and gave me two quarters to get some chocolate covered espresso beans (mmmmmm). At the register, I saw one of those Kinder chocolate eggs with candy in them, and I whined and he bought me one because I'd never had one before. In a stroke of insanely good luck (or fate), there was a SMURF in it. No joke. It was /perfect/. We went to The Garage and tooled around, and got pictures taken on little stickers, and then it was time for the movie.
We saw A Beautiful Mind which I wasn't all that excited about before, but Luke said that Iskra really liked it, so we went. It was /really/ good. I liked it an awful lot, and I'm allergic to Russell Crowe. It was a Ron Howard film, which I was not aware of. I really liked it, and I think you all should see it. Toward the end of the movie I was getting a little chilly, and I grabbed Luke's jacket and put it over me like a blanket so I could smell him and warm his jacket up. I sure did miss my friend.
After the movie we went to The Border Cafe so I could eat my favorite meal of all time, Crescent City Catfish, which is catfish in this creamy lemon pepper sauce with black beans and rice. It is SO GOOD. I was completely and utterly thrilled, and Luke and I got to spend more time talking and laughing. So nice. I can't believe I let 6 years go by without seeing him.
We drove back to Rhode Island (sad sad) and he dropped me off. I couldn't bear to go. I gave him 4 or 5 big long bear hugs and just tried to remember every single detail of my incredibly happy day. I will remember his smell and the feel of his hair and the wonderful hugs. I told him in the car that he is one of the best friends I have ever had. He is definitely one of the best friends I will /ever/ have. In just that short time, I remember all of the things that made me crush on him and date him and just adore him, and everything we said or did or laughed about rushed over me and filled me and consumed me. I am still flying. I called him to say thank you and make sure he got home okay, which he did. Yay!
So, Luke, I love you. I love you so incredibly much and I really did mean it when I said you were one of the best friends I've ever had. I plan to make December an annual tradition, and I will never let another year go by without seeing you. I associate Boston with you, and I will treasure so many things: running through the fountain at the Christian Science Reading Room, parties and laughter and acid and getting bopped in the head by TweetyFish at Messiah Village, New Hack City and even more fun, Mr. T movies, Be Somebody or Be Somebody's Fool, mahalaga!, Slalom Boy (King of the... snow... and skis... and poles), Don't Eat Kids (Please), the ninja star, the Ninja.of.Love and the Smurf.of.Love, Meanie Smurf, "don't fuck with a clown with pubic lice, he might snap and wipe out Wyoming," midnight blue Crayola crayons, cinnamon kisses on the roof, Angels and Visitations, "clearly I am craving bric-a-brac; hook me up, yo!," "Lucas! Phone for you!," quiet conversations at Guenon Monkey House, watching you learn to like fish at the Border, and so much more. Thank you for another night of magical memories, and for giving me my dear friend back, and for letting us pick up today like no time had gone by at all. Thank you for everything, but most importantly, my Ninja.of.Love, thank you for YOU.

(The Insider was one of my favourite movies of 1999)
Also: I'm trying to become more conversant with Vietnamese food -
what's something you'd recommend besides Pho?
Cheers!

On Vietnamese food and Russell Crowe
Date: 2001-12-28 08:00 am (UTC)As for A Beautiful Mind, if you like Russell Crowe's acting, you will like it, because he did a pretty damned good job. If you're looking for something quite historical like The Insider (which I didn't like at all), you will miss out a little because I've been told it's only loosely based on the life of John Nash.
BUT, Jennifer Connelly is in it, and my goodness, is she hot. ;)
