That's how he felt today when session was over. When we'd finished building with LEGOs, and when the game of "pool" was over (I put it in quotes because, since he's not-yet-7, I took liberty with some of the rules for him, including having to use the cue ball). He built a car, a flying car, and I built a little house. He put the roof on it. I put the person inside. He said, "You are a nice one." He said he liked to play with me. The heat was on in my office (WHY? Wacky system.) so we went into the pool room to bang the balls around. He won, but I was careful not to lose badly. I just chose harder shots, and pool is not my forte. He wanted to play again, but I asked him to, for me, draw how he was feeling on the board instead. He wrote, in big block-bubble letters, G-R-A-T. Great.

He told me, during LEGOs, "I bet you're happy all the time." He turned the little LEGO face with black hair around so that it was smiling. "No," I said, "I was sad yesterday." It happens. "Look," he said, "I'm going to put this statue on top of the house we made." Yes, do that. And smile again, that way you do with your two front teeth in various stages of growing-in. And make your freckles dance. Ask me again, "When do I get to come back?"

That makes me feel G-R-A-T, too. Thank you.

(Throat is better. Patched things with friend. Sunny today. And Mark, I don't know what kind of candle you lit last night, but I had one completely messed up dream.)

Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road.
Time grabs you by the wrist, directs you where to go.
So make the best of this test, and don't ask why.
It's not a question, but a lesson learned in time.

It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right.
I hope you had the time of your life.

So take the photographs and still frames in your mind.
Hang it on a shelf of good health and good time.
Tattoos of memories and dead skin on trial.
For what it's worth, it was worth all the while.

It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right.
I hope you had the time of your life.
