Why I love Coworker Velma
Jan. 17th, 2002 04:21 pmI love Coworker Velma. She's convinced, though, that I'm going to move away from Ohio and never think of her, never give her a second thought. She couldn't be further from the truth.
She is one of the strongest people I have ever encountered in my lifetime. She understands the need to be a superhero. She succeeds.
I forget, a lot of the time, that Velma has 11 years on me. I forget not because her wisdom and experience aren't apparent, but because she still has all of the idealism and energy of youth. Did I mention she is amazing?
Today when we were talking, she reiterated her theories about me. (Velma likes to tell me that somewhere inside of me, there is a "one-woman girl" inside of me dying to get out.) She says I'm suppressing my inner desires. Today Velma told me that she is certain that when I am her age, I will be in a committed, monogamous partnership of 8-10 years. She says that I will be more than content with this.
When I asked her, "How do you know this?" she replied, "Because I'm old." :)
When I told her to write it down and in 11 years I will write to her and compare, she said, "Don't worry. I'll be checking in on you periodically after you move away." And you know what? She will. And I will look forward to those correspondences, like I look forward to our Thursday evening conversations.
Velma, I'm going to miss you terribly when I'm gone. Your wisdom and advice have been so helpful to me this year, but more than that, your confidence in who I am is stunning. Thank you.
