Interesting. Each piece was very different and the whole experience was rather disjointed, as if they all comprised several different events rather than one cohesive trip. It's good to be home, but I don't want to go to work. Jennifer left over two hours ago, and I wish that I was working mornings (even though I hate mornings) so that our schedules were more compatible. I mean, I'm waking up at 8am anyway with the alarm, I might as well go to work.

The drives both to and from Pittsburgh were problem-free and wonderful. I like long car trips with The GirlTM and this was no exception. Usually I am the passenger, but the role reversal was nice - her holding my hand, her running the radio, etc. Weather cooperated both ways (riiiiiiight until we got into Columbus last night, when it was insanely pouring), and we got to watch a brilliant electrical storm all the way through Ohio last night. Breathtaking.

It was nice to catch up with Rachel and say hello, but I was overwhelmed by her house. It's a small house and it's just crammed full of people (Mom and Dad and Rachel and Dave and Bridget and the cat and the dog and sometimes friends) and things and activities and more things. It's the kind of house where you need to go through rooms to get to other rooms and I kept getting turned around, but mostly I was all worked up by the sheer volume of stuff and people. I got to meet her niece (Bridget) and she is very adorable, but she had a bazillion toys in the living room and never said please. (Jude Pet Peeve: Not saying please) There were two sleeping options in Rachel's house - the couch and loveseat in the living room (Grand Central Station!), or the bunk beds in her sister's room. The bottom bunk was about 4 inches away from the top bunk, and it really wasn't a good set-up. Jen and I drove a bit south to stay in a hotel. We lounged in a king sized bed and I watched Trading Spaces and The Real World. Yay!

Rachel got her brother and his friend Dan to chauffeur us around Pittsburgh. It was neat to see some of the things (Phipps Conservatory was lovely, and we went on the Incline, and ate at Primanti Brothers, and got dessert at some place named Gullifty's) and to walk around a new place at night, but I felt bad that we were dragging these two boys around when they would rather be playing video games. Dan was really funny and he was convinced that Jen and I wouldn't like to do the things he liked to do. When I asked him, he said he liked drinking coffee, doing art things, and going to punk shows. Umm... SIGN ME UP!

After the night in the hotel, Jennifer and I had some time to kill before meeting up with [livejournal.com profile] lorimelton and [livejournal.com profile] ralphmelton, so we drove around and ended up blowing some money at Wal-Mart (evil evil evil). I am so overwhelmed by Wal-Mart. I bought Higher Learning and Riding in Cars with Boys and they should amuse me for a while. (I recently acquired Lost and Delirious from [livejournal.com profile] cappucinogrrl, too, yay!) We went to Casa Melton and chatted for a little while before heading out to this lovely little restaurant called Crepes. I had a banana and chocolate crepe and Jen had this egg, cheese, and sausage crepe, and they were completely and thoroughly good. Must. Go. Back! We walked around (Shadyside?) some of the shops and I bought some more Playmobil knights (the Golden Knight and the Baron) - wahoo! - and then we went to The Chocolate Moose and got yummies. Life is good.

Lori and Ralph bought us birthday gifts, which was completely and totally unnecessary. I got The Lives Behind The Lines, a For Better or For Worse book, and I am enjoying it immensely. I love that strip! Thank you so much! I needed the calm of the Meltons after the chaotic Saturday. Saturday night, I had crazy nightmares of chaos that involved having multiple plans and obligations, and I woke up nervous and stressed out. I was dreaming that I had to be at a wedding with my family but I was wrong about the time, and I had to pick up Jennifer and get to the Meltons for lunch, but I didn't have my car and needed a ride, which means I had to miss the wedding, and oh my goodness, I nearly gave myself a heart attack in the morning when I woke up. I need a weekend to rest from my weekend!

I had fun, though. Next time I head out that way, I'd like [livejournal.com profile] kungfoogirl to be in town so she can show me her favorite things. And I need to spend more time with everyone. I sure do miss those Meltons.
