I have More Smiles Than Should Be Allowed By LawTM. It really doesn't even take that much. I switched CDs in the car this afternoon after Open Hours. I had been listening to Sarah McLachlan's 'Possession' for the past two days, and I hadn't thought of it, but it was probably contributing to my tense, dour mood. I mean, really, how many times can you listen to songs like "Hold On" or hear lines like "I fear I have nothing to give"? I switched to Disc 2 of my beloved Simon & Garfunkel 'Old Friends' 3CD box set. (If you don't have this, and you even remotely like S&G, YOU GO GET IT NOW!)

After "Patterns," the radio began playing "Cloudy." In and of itself, the song isn't particularly cheery, but I sure think Paul Simon is /the/ cutest man in the entire universe, and I just want to squoosh him and love on him to pieces. So anyway, it gets to the line where he says (in the cutest voice imaginable): Hey, Sunshine! I haven't seen you in a lo-o-o-o-ong time. and I almost had to stop the car. If I had the capacity to do so, I would have cried out of sheer joy. Paul Simon makes me so darned happy. I'm still smiling just thinking about it. :)

Man, I am one verbose motherflower.

When I was a kid, I used to listen to this one Abba 8track over and over. I didn't have an actual 8track player, but we had this trivia robot called 2XL, and he operated on 8track tapes. Hee!

I used to play Metallica in my little brothers Teddy Ruxpin bear. The bear would spaz out, and my brother would cry.. damn, I was evil.

When I was about 6 years old, I had this stuffed cat. My cousin Kenny used to call it "Boo Boo Kitty." He would balance it on the armrest of the couch and yell, "Boo Boo Kitty! *whack it across the room* Eight lives to go! *pause* Boo Boo Kitty! *whack* Seven lives to go!"

Ha ha ha!

Heh.. it was all fun and games till one fateful day when the fan took off Le Mutts head.. and I got grounded for the emotional trauma that it caused my sister. It's a wonder that my family still talks to me..

I don't have the box set (and probably won't get it) but I do have all S&G and the first half of S solo on the original vinyl! Not that I have had a record player for the past 6 years but still!

Oddly enough, I was listening to Paul while I read this post. "American Tune". Totally random, winamp was on shuffle. (But then again, I have mannnnnny Paul mp3's. So it's not all that odd.) While I don't personally own any Paul Simon cds (gasp!), my mom owns every Paul Simon cd known to humankind, and a lot of vinyls as well, and she tells me not to buy my own, cause one day, they'll all be mine. In the meantime, I'll just keep borrowing hers.

I wish my mom were cool enough to have lots of Paul on vinyl. As it is, I don't know that she likes him all that much. However, she /did/ buy me that box set, and I will appreciate it forever and ever amen.

Smooch!

Paul Simon

Yeah, he is really good. Don't know about Art Garfunkel, though, sometimes he was OK and other times just this extraneous choirboy. Let's look at the breakdown of talent: Paul Simon plays the guitar, writes music, and sings well. Art Garfunkel sings well. That's 3 to 1.

Anyway, favorites:
The Boxer (into it since way back when, but now my job at times remind me of its lyrics)
Me and Julio Down By the Schoolyard (great music, great beat, great lyrics. Covered well by Dave Matthews Band, and by Me First and the Gimme Gimmes)
and of course, Call Me Al.

One evening, my brother and I had a little party when we shared an apartment briefly. After much alcohol, we started dancing together to "Me and Julio." That song will always have a special place in my heart. (But I /loathe/ DMB. The Me First cover is good, though.)

My favorites: (S&G) Red Rubber Ball, Cecilia, Feelin' Groovy, Silent Night (the one with the newscast in it), Homeward Bound, The Boxer. (Paul) Born at the Right Time, Boy in the Bubble, Under African Skies.

I could do without Art Garfunkel if it weren't for his pretty harmonies. The occasional song that he wrote for S&G suck, to put it plainly. Bleh!

Please, don't slander Art.

I had a mad crush on Art Garfunkel a few years ago. I liked that he had an angelic voice and silly hair and was so earnest. The fact that he's not a very good songwriter was something I found endearing rather than irritating. Also-- 'Old Friends' which is a sort of mini-S & G boxed set is really good; it has previously unreleased songs, swell liner notes and extremely cute photos.

I have a weakness for men in afros, though. As a kid I had a crush on Mr. Kotter and William Katt, the greatest American hero.

I need help.

I find it very cool that you had afro crushes. When I was young, I had a big crush on Mr. T. I confessed this to a classmate of mine in grad school and she made fun of me for weeks. But then /she/ confessed that she'd had a crush on Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka. HA HA HA HA.

I love 'Old Friends.' It's what I've been listening to in the car. It's a wonderful compendium.

Yeah, I have known Pantsie since high school and she's one of my closest friends. We were in drama class together and used to piss off the drama teacher because we were such hams. She also went to college with me aaand she's going to be one of my bridesmaids at the waffle circus that will be my wedding. In short, she rocks. I would put her in my pocket if I could get away with it. And her husband too-- I guess I'd need a larger pocket, though.

How can you NOT LOVE Happy Paul!!! At least that's what my bestfriend Karl and I call him:) Paul Simon is so awesome and I know exactly what you mean about crying from sheer joy. For my 20th birthday Karl bought us concert tickets and I started crying during You Can Call Me Al. I think the love is genetic because my mother told me that she literally killed one of her S & G albums because she listened to Bridge Over Troubled Water so many times. In any case, you rock my socks for loving Paul and btw I really like your new icon with your spikey hair in black and white:) Have a great day!!

I'm so glad that other people love Paul as much as I do. When I went to see him in July 2001, I swear it was one of the best nights of my life. (It was one of my very first LJ entries!) It was like he was playing every song for me, because I love them all so much. I ended up bumrushing to join a big crowd up in the paid seats, and the ushers kept trying to kick people out but so many people were having a wonderful time.

I think they could stop world wars by just playing Paul Simon tunes. I swear that everyone was in harmony that night. It was so beautiful.

p.s. Thank you! :) You're so cute!

Hey that's when I went to see Happy Paul!!! probably a different concert though since I was still in Youngstown at the time...in any case it was awesome. Brian Wilson so sucked though, I mean I know he's old and feeble and all but for the love of God they shouldn't have let him play as long as Paul. In any case, yes I adore Paul Simon also:) I'm even wearing a Paul Simon tee-shirt right now! hehe

p.s. if I'm so cute then you're too cute:)

Brian Wilson opened when I went, too. (I went at Polaris here in Columbus.) He was like a doped up animaton. It was so weird.

Brian Wilson creeps me out.
