Conversation between me and two residents:
R1 - Have you ever dated a Black man?
Me - Yep.
R1 - Really?
Me - Yep.
R1 - You're not just saying that, are you?
Me - Yes. I'm lying. I'm trying to impress you.
R1 - Now you're making fun of me.
R2 - So, umm...
Me - Naw, I'm playing with you.
R1 - He wasn't any good?
Me - Oh, no, he was fine. A nice guy. Most of the guys I've dated were really nice.
R2 - But now you've changed your sexuality.
R1 - What?
Me - Well, no. But how you mean it, yes.
R2 - You're not with no guy now though, right?
Me - I'm sure not.
R1 - He mustn't have done it right.
Me - I'm sure that's not true.
R2 - Then why?
Me - Because otherwise all you fine gentleman would be just too tempting.
R1 - You playin'.
Me - You're so right, Mr. ____. You're /so/ right.

Date: 2002-12-06 05:15 pm (UTC)Now I just work with men, but last year I used to work with the homeless women as well. I would NOT have had the kind of conversations Jude has (with her male residents) with the women. Not even if they initiated it.
This is not to discount the reality of sexual harassment as a workplace problem, but if someone makes a false or exaggerated claim of it, that someone is most likely to be a woman, directing it at a man. If Jude's guys say she's sexually harassing them, the fact that she's a lesbian woman is going to make their accusation unlikely to stick. On the other hand, if a woman resident had levied that charge at me (perhaps mad at me for a case management decision), I would have had a handful o' trouble.
It never happened, but if the women had asked if I was dating or anything like that, I would have immediately changed the subject.

Date: 2002-12-06 05:44 pm (UTC)*note to anyone reading this who is not Jude: this is not offensive, but can be understood in the context of a joke. I would type out the joke, but it's long, and a lot more fun to tell in person. Especially when you're supposed to be working.
