Kid Magnet

I have had several experiences with children this week. My [livejournal.com profile] smurfbrother and I are child magnets. Kids dig us, make faces at us, want to play with us, and generally stick to us like glue. So it was no surprise that when I went to Vic's on Friday night with [livejournal.com profile] lemur68, [livejournal.com profile] kieron and [livejournal.com profile] laughingsal that I would end up with a 2-year-old boyfriend.

He was the cutest little child, almost three, with that angelic appearance that spurs inquiries like, "Is that a boy or a girl?" He had a winning smile, shy and beaming. I made faces at him, and soon the force of his laughter was knocking him to the ground. After he came to my area of the coffee house several times, I began to wonder whether his caretaker was concerned that he was over on my couch so much. When he began talking about his daddy, I asked him where his daddy was. We walked over to his family's table together so I could introduce myself. Andrew (his father) is a wonderful man (I actually ran into him again yesterday morning). My little boyfriend held my hand and paraded me around Vic's several times before settling on my lap. Jennifer sketched him, and when his father came to take him home, he began to tantrum. He was adorable.

On Sunday afternoon, I took my presents to Carina's to visit with her and the twins. Tayler and Tyler are my own personal adopted children, and I love them so very much I could very possibly explode. I brought them Kerplunk and Barbie Fashion Plates, both of which were inexpensive but seemed like they would be big hits, and they were (yay). The girls made me a frame with a picture of the two of them and me making goofy faces at Maggie Moo's last summer. Oddly enough, I gave Carina a framed set of pictures of the girls from that very same day. Hee.

Tayler and Tyler wear me out - in fact, they spent a significant portion of Sunday afternoon hanging onto my legs trying to keep me - but it is wonderful. To have seen their faces when the marbles came down in Kerplunk, or when I tell them to look goofy for the camera - well, those are priceless.

I like to pretend I am a loner sort of person, the kind of person who is sure to be independent and never to need another human being. But for all of that, I'd sure like some little person that I could watch grow, and just maybe we would need each other. Thank you to the parents around me who let me share their children. <3

Those kids are the lucky ones - having someone great like you in their lives.

I miss my Widget and her lovely parents. I remember the day that Jen and I hung out with you guys and I got some hard core Widget time. And Mom time, too!

I have said this before...but I will say it again...I am amazed, in a good way, about how well you relate to and interact with children. You would make an incredible parent to some lucky child if you ever chose that route.

In the meantime, from my observation, you make an amazing impact in the moments you encounter and interact with children now. They are lucky:)

You're sweet.

I swear that the only thing I do with children is listen to them, and smile a lot. That's it. There's no secret.

I miss child therapy. :(

You know what....you also do something that makes them trust you almost immediately. That's not something most people are able to do.

it sounds like you might actually be, in your own way, Joe Wholesome. Well, Josephine Wholesome, if you will. Children do not cling to the legs of people who aren't open-hearted and kind. Also, I bet that you probably don't condescend to kids, and that's always a plus.

Oh, I am definitely Joe Wholesome. I totally agree with you. I am a sweet and innocent, pure and perfect paragon of virtue! I worked at Boy Scout camp for so long that most of the time, I don't even swear, for crying out loud. :)

Also, I bet that you probably don't condescend to kids, and that's always a plus.

I absolutely don't. I really don't even use a lot of "baby talk," because my mother never did and I don't really think about it. And we're a family of geniuses. (That was a joke.)

You're just dead gorgeous, Jude. That's why they follow you! *chuckles*

Seriously, it's good to have kid mojo. I don't have very much at all and it leads to having to repeat myself far too often to Laurel.

The photo gifts sound like a wonderful example of synchronicity.

Little kids are an adventure.

That's right. All the two year olds think I'm totally hawt!

I would like to meet Ms. Laurel.
