What have I gotten myself into?
Jun. 13th, 2003 05:58 pm(I am going to temporarily put off the rant about the Employee Appreciation Cook-Out.)
So this afternoon, Jennifer and I went to look at the apartment we loved on the outside. It's a somewhat pricey 2BR, but not /too/ pricey (as in, it's still a good deal less than we both pay right now). It's owned by my current landlord, so he's flexible with the end of my lease (July 31st), and he doesn't require a credit check on me. We had been looking online and found a place that was available now, and thought we'd check it out and possibly move a little early.
I wasn't really planning on moving /this/ early. Like, next weekend. You see, the apartment, as I said, is available now, so the landlord doesn't want to hold a vacant apartment for a while. I thought maybe he'd say July 1st. No. He said next weekend. As in, we get the keys to the new place next Friday. A week from today. And I have to be 100% out of my current place next Sunday. The 22nd. Shoot me now.
The fun part will be coming up with the security deposit and first month-and-change rent on, oh, this coming Monday or Tuesday. Sayonara savings account. And then there's the part where I need to pack AND move AND clean an entire apartment while also working full time at a job I'm about to lose. (Do I feel an illness coming on? Kidding, though I may ask for a personal day on Friday to move.) And then there's all the address changing, and the mail forwarding, and the unpacking. Oh, and the physical moving. Are there any unemployed/underemployed boys and girls who might want to help move some boxes on Friday? *bats eyelashes*
But now the good part: The apartment is /beautiful/. It's on the second and third floor of a brick building split into four apartments (two first floor apartments and two second and third floor apartments). You walk in from the first floor along a wall of exposed brick. There's a small patch of hardwood floor with a half bathroom and a utility closet for a washer and dryer. There's a door to a small back deck, a pantry closet, and a kitchen with a fair amount of counter space. There are less cabinets than I have right now, but newer appliances (refrigerator, stove, garbage disposal). There are some hooks to hang plants.
The large living room has the exposed brick wall, and there is more exposed brick on the other wall with the decorative fireplace. There are lots of windows and high ceilings. The carpeting looks brand new. The windowsills are natural wood. The staircase is also natural wood and open, and runs up from the living room. That staircase is gorgeous. There is room for my beloved's easel, and high enough ceilings for it.
The third floor is not as spectacular. It has two bedrooms, but they are the size of a postage stamp. They each have a decent closet, though... and one can be used for the bed and nightstand and the other can be used for the futon and the dressers. There is a smaller (half a postage stamp?) office with a slanted ceiling and a skylight, and there's already phone and cable hookups in there (I think). There is a full bath with tub up there, too, and there's a slant ceiling with a skylight right over the tub. (The slant ceiling makes it so that if you want to shower with someone, that someone has to be a midget.) Because of the slanted ceiling, the toilet is in a weird place. There's a little section with some shelves, and then there's a sink.
The whole thing looks like it was redone recently. The carpeting is new (must. watch. cats.), the windowsills on the second floor are beautiful, the woodworking is immaculate, and the exposed brick is lovely. The layout, aside from the smallness of the third floor, is fantastic. I think the whole thing will really make me want to spend time in the living room, because it's gorgeous. The bedrooms are so small that I think they'll mostly be for sleeping and storage, which is good because the second floor can be the Entertaining area.
There is so much to do, and so little time! Perhaps the weekend of the Fourth of July would be a good time for a housewarming party.

Date: 2003-06-13 04:26 pm (UTC)It's a common practce among large and small companies alike; I experienced something similar when I lived in Bexley under Schottenstein Management.
On the bright side, Jude should have a windfall when she receives the refund of her first deposit four weeks from now.

Date: 2003-06-13 05:34 pm (UTC)So that's $755 for the deposit and $755 for the first month's rent, plus the fraction for the little bit of June... minus $240 (half of my current deposit).
That's a boatload of money.
