Tonight I finished reading Cruddy by Lynda Barry. wasted_breathSeany lent it to me, and if you like to be mildly disturbed, I think you should definitely read it. It was original, quick reading, and captivating. A definite recommend.

I have been trying to keep a list of the books I've read this year, but I end up remembering another here or there, so it's not in order. For some reason, that pricks my obsessive/compulsive nature to no end. Here are the books I've read in 2003 (that I can remember):

Alma Mater, Rita Mae Brown
About a Boy, Nick Hornby
High Fidelity, Nick Hornby
Orlando, Virginia Woolf
Written on the Body, Jeanette Winterson (re-read)
Breaking the Habit: A Lesbian Nun Story, Jeanne Cordova
The Lovely Bones, Alice Sebold
Harriet the Spy, Louise Fitzhugh (re-read)
Less Than Zero, Bret Easton Ellis
How to Be Good, Nick Hornby
The Robber Bride, Margaret Atwood
A Child Called "It", Dave Pelzer
Bridges Out Of Poverty, Payne, DeVol and Dreussi-Smith
Edited Out, Lisa Haddock
Tomboys!: Tales of Dyke Derring-Do, edited by Lynne Yamaguchi
Courtney Love: The Real Story, Poppy Z. Brite
Songbook, Nick Hornby
Queen's Champion, Cris Newport
Daughters of a Coral Dawn, Katherine V. Forrest
Their Eyes Were Watching God, Zora Neale Hurston
Memoirs of a Geisha, Albert Golden
We So Seldom Look On Love, Barbara Gowdy
Pretty In Pink: The Golden Age of Teenage Movies, Jonathan Bernstein
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, J.K. Rowling
Cruddy, Lynda Barry

Dang it! Now I need another book (or I can raid Jennifer's collection of trashy lesbian novels again). I suppose I have plenty of time to hit the library.

So far this year, I've learned that I'm easily amused by Nick Hornby, that I fell in love with Memoirs of a Geisha, and that I owe [livejournal.com profile] cappucinogrrl BIG for reminding me that I always wanted to read Their Eyes Were Watching God.

Yay, books! Total for 2003 so far (that I remember): 25. I've got catching up to do.

I remember Harriet the Spy from when I was very young. It was so, so good. On a par with My Side of the Mountain.

Is High Fidelity as good as the movie?

I've never read My Side of the Mountain. What's it about? I love Harriet the Spy. If you ever want to re-read it, let me know.

As for High Fidelity, like all of Hornby's books, it's a light, easy read. I think it captures the inner workings of the John Cusack character much better than the book (of course), but since I saw the movie before I read the book, I couldn't help but imagine the movie as I went along.

Well, I've only read Memoirs of a Geisha from that list (Currently I am working on Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, NO SPOILERS PLEASE) and I must say I enjoyed it a lot. So much in fact that I was sad that it wasn't a true story! Still, it was well worth it.

Don't worry, I won't blow the book for you. (Did you get to the part where Hermione dies? Just kidding!!) Have fun reading - it's certainly a swell story. :)

I loved Memoirs of a Geisha. I'd had it for a long time (I picked it up at a used bookstore and never got around to reading it) and thought I wouldn't like it, but I totally fell in love with the characters and the story. And everywhere I went with the book, people would remark, "I loved that book!" It was neat.

I loved Memoirs of a Geisha but the ending was terrible. It pissed me off!

I've read She's Come Undone and Cunt, and White Oleander is on my list of books to read. I will look up Skipped Parts too - the library's just up the street.

Thanks for the tips!

What did you think of A Child Called "It?" I've pondered reading it, but I don't want to read a book merely to be disturbed.

It's certainly disturbing. I think it was published as "shock reading," I really do.

Then I probably won't bother.

Yeah, I don't think you'd be missing much, honestly.

I read a book called "It" once.

That was disturbing.

I may read it (It?) again someday, too.

I read that book once. It took forever.

Took me three days.

I couldn't put It down.
