So, since [livejournal.com profile] kyoki_tenchi is looking at trying to obtain social work licensure in Georgia, I figured I'd take a gander at the licensure/reciprocity regulations in my two possible future locations: Massachusetts and California.

Massachusetts allows full reciprocity for all licenses. This means I could get my LISW here in Ohio next year, and it would become an LICSW in Massachusetts, provided I fill out the forms and provide some professional references.

California does not allow reciprocity with any states. On top of that, they have CRAZY requirements, including 6 years of supervision, a California-specific written exam /and/ an oral exam. DEAR JESUS GOD! (You can practice unlicensed in CA with a BSW or an MSW, but still!)

That's craziness!

Apropos of nothing and because I am too lazy to email, are there any available smurf items that you are particularly after? Kris and I are off to Smurf Mecca (ie Paris) in 2 1/2 weeks...

I haven't even looked to see what smurfs are even out this year. (And my current smurfs are still packed up from the move - must work on that.) You don't have to get me any smurfs, but I do appreciate you thinking of me. :)

(Besides, if K insists, which he might, I trust your collective smurf judgment.)

Well there are some paraphenalia of the vintage variety here in town that I know you would want so I can steer him that direction if need be. And I've found another bag of smufs from last year and I am sure some of those were for you...

I need to build a shelf or display for my little blue babies.

And I wish I could be there playing in Paris with you and K!

It would depend, really, on the sort of job I wanted off the bat. I mean, I would imagine I could get a great (low-paying) grassroots job without the Independent Clinical license... especially since I don't think I really ever want to do therapy.

On the other side, it would mean that if we /were/ planning to move to CA, I wouldn't have to worry about supervision and taking that test so much.

Yay for MA!!

Cali is superduper fucking crazy, Y0!
I have a friend from BC who practices out there and was telling me about all the craziness and oral exams and other assorted crap... Oy!

Save yourself the trouble!
Move East Young Man! :)

Well, the jobs I would want in CA would probably not be jobs that would require LCSW (which is what it's called in CA, damn them all with all of their different names!)... but yeah. It's definitely making it more appealing, especially since I can have my LISW here next year.

I would just get my LICSW here asap (after passing said exam...) but it would be a big old waste of $238 (application + license fees), since GA won't take it! :P

Buggers!

Hey, what's wrong with Cali? ;)

(Other than Grey Davis, the fabricated power shortage, and the immigration Nazis, that is...)

You know, if you can practice unlicensed with an MSW there, then your degree probably qualifies you for any job there that you'd be qualified for there. If the Cali LSW is that hard to get, it most be considered qualification for much more advanced positions. Supervisory, perhaps.

I hear that Cali has a lot of jobs for social workers, licensed or otherwise. And they pay more, although given the high cost of living there you probably come out behind.

Yeah, I was thinking that, too - that if it's such a pain to get the licensure, it's probably only for certain things, like private practice (which I'm not interested in).

It was just kind of an eye-opener... I think it's good to know what the reciprocity rules are like before I go traipsing across the country.

I want to work on the macro-level eventually anyway, and I don't think I'll need a license.
