I guess life chose me after all.
Oct. 18th, 2003 10:09 amThis has been an amazing birthday, and I owe it to all of you for making it so special. Between the LJ posts, the emails, the phone calls, and the e-cards, I am definitely feeling the internet love. THANKS!
My birthday started on Thursday night when Jen took me out to dinner at Barcelona and we just spent some good time talking. We exchanged gifts a little before midnight, and it was just really great. Aside from the Sno-Cone Machine (which was the cause of much rejoicing), she also got me a messenger bag for work, and it's really awesome looking. She always puts so much thought into her gifts, and I love that I am on the receiving end of that.
I went to work yesterday morning and Supervisor Sara had made me a little poster that said happy birthday, and Coworker Tamarine gave me a card. Coworker Sarah even remembered to say, "Happy Candy Birthday, Jude" (a la Crank Yankers), but she forgot to write my name in gummi worms. (Hee.) I got a singing phone call from Brandie's Mom! My team took me to Chipotle for lunch (mmmmmm) and when we came back, I found out that they sent me flowers!! (I mentioned that I'd never received flowers at work, so they rushed out and ordered me some. They rock.) It was so sweet. At 4:30, Supervisor Sara said, "Happy Birthday, go home."
I stopped at the store for some party supplies, and when I got home, I found out via answering machine that
Rachel was already at the bus station, so I jumped back in the car and picked her up. She helped me bring in the food and then
Shani arrived from Alabama. YAY! We waited for Jen to come home, and when she did, she had picked up the cake (picture later) and also brought with her a dozen roses and a really sweet card. "Sweet" doesn't really do the card justice. Shani gave us presents (YAY! Pretty in Pink) and we had some take-out chinese food, and then people started coming. I wonder if I can remember them all:
Dianna came first, with Maylie in tow, who is getting so big and mobile, it's really amazing. In no particular order, people came: Former Coworker Jennifer plus kids,
Patti and
Scott,
Carina and Scott,
Sarah and Carlos Carlos (who never ceases to crack me up, holy crap, he is so effing funny), Coworker Tamarine and Rob,
Jeff and three people he'd met,
Peas and
Sarah,
Lis0r,
Brandie and
Jason,
Jen,
Daina,
Missy Goodtimes and
Jared, and maybe there were a couple of other people but I've forgotten. It was kind of crazy because there were so many people from so many different areas of my life, but I hope that everyone had a good time.
We got so much loot - you guys are really sweet! The Schoolhouse Rock DVD arrived from
Jodie, and lots of people brought presents: wine and gift cards and home-made cards and toys and bugs and candy and CDs and movies and books (including a Smurf book from Amsterdam!) and monkeys and toy swords and a really pretty Story People piece of art (When I first met her, I knew in a moment I would have to spend the next few days re-arranging my mind so there'd be room for her to stay) that really really touched me. Also touching were the poems that
crena's children wrote for us ("Fall is nice. Lice. Dice.").
The cake was delicious, and the company was delicious, and I was so deliriously happy to see each and every one of them (except the people I didn't know, they were nice, but not deliriously nice). I truly am blessed to have such wonderful people in my life, and I hope that the love I've accumulated throughout my 20s is going to carry with me for life. There's nothing quite like having a birthday party to know who loves you.
What was really great was that the handful of us who stayed on until the end were having a really goofy great time! It was such an odd smattering of people (Lis0r and Jen and Shani and Rachel and Jennifer and Carina and Scott and me) and we were so geeky, but we were all laughing. At one point, we realized that we all had those photon lights, and Rachel shut off the lights so we could compare. It was really dorky, but hysterical, and I think my neighbors must think I'm totally tarded. And last night I learned quite a bit about Carina's husband Scott, which is nice because I've never really spent any good time with him before. I have a new respect and liking for him - he can really be hysterical, and when he's on, he's really on. I love the way the two of them can imitate their children /perfectly/.
Around 1am, we had to drive Rachel back to the bus station, so we bid the stragglers goodbye and headed out. We left Shani so she could fall asleep, and when we came back, she was out cold. Jen and I stayed up to talk in bed a little bit, and then we drifted off to dreamland. (Well, I /tried/. I had a crazy sugar buzz from eating so much frosting, and I had a hard time falling asleep.)
Thank you, all of you, for helping make my birthday special. I am so full of love.
(And to prove how we're getting older, the party was easy to clean up, and all but over at 12:30am.)

Date: 2003-10-18 10:48 pm (UTC)I still, no matter what, say that knowing you has forever changed me. I learned more about me from knowing you than I thought any person whom I was not intimate with could teach me. I am always amazed at the time I got to spend directly in your company, albeit online. For your birthday, I cannot offer you anything material, and I cannot even come up with a good poem that is either philosophical, emotional, or humourous. Instead, I just offer you a thank you and a hearty happy birthday.
Forever your friend,
~Moe~
