I have Survivor Guilt

(And no, I'm not talking about the television show.)

My Jennifer has been dicked around by The Academy of Art College for the last time. After years of toil, agony, staff changes, and mixed messages, her thesis has been rejected for the last time. And while I under no uncertain terms wholeheartedly support her and her decisions, I am furious with the College and the people who let a situation like hers happen.

How on earth can a school lose a significant portion of its faculty on a yearly basis? How on earth can a school reject a project created by a committee nearly entirely based on regime change and the firing of the faculty members that make up that committee? TWICE to the same student? The same student with an enormous school loan with "The Academy of Art College" written all over it. You'd think that since the school gave her a 4.0 in coursework they would think she had the skills to produce a satisfactory thesis.

I know this wasn't my project, and it isn't my situation to make decisions about or deal with. But I'm suddenly feeling guilty about my own Master's degrees, and the ease with which I completed the requirements. Everything was so straightforward and rational, and there were no bizarre circumstance or mass faculty firings. I've never heard anything like the situation that she has been dealing with for the last four years. My only hope is that she hasn't vested her self-esteem on the asshats who have yanked her chain (and her wallet) for so long, because when you stop to think about it for even a second, you can't help but see how amazing she is.

Anyone wanna take a trip to San Francisco with me to kick some asses?

I don't think the field placement process was straightforward and rational. But yeah, our MSW's were a breeze overall. Sucks to be Jen.

Well yeah, the whole field practicum situation was pretty neurotic and whacked, but it's not like OSU was going to prevent someone from graduating with his or her MSW because a placement it selected for a student was later deemed unsatisfactory.
