First Outside Day
Feb. 18th, 2004 02:40 pmIt's that day, that one day every year that should be celebrated, but isn't on any calendar. If you ever lived in any area that gets any kind of cold outside, you know this day. If you were ever a high school or college student in a cold weather place, you /definitely/ know this day.
It's officially the First Day to Go Outside Without Freezing. It's sunny, it's 40something outside, and you can almost smell the grass trying to grow. If I were in high school, this would have been the first day that I went outside after lunch, sat on the wall, and talked with friends. We would have big spring smiles and no jackets, even if we were cold. If I were in college, I would have taken my lunch outside today, sat on frozen concrete benches, and thought warm thoughts. There would be hopeful people playing frisbee on the lawn, and the outdoor population (once only smokers) would triple in size.
It's that time of the year, kids. I walked from my car to my building and just /knew/. Deep inside the earth, spring is growing, reaching, looming. It's about time.
