My Jennifer and I finally got around to finish watching Frida. I don't know how many of you saw it, but I /loved/ it. Not only was it visually beautiful, but I think I shall sleep tonight lusting after Salma Hayek with short hair and suit pants. Good golly but that woman is fine. And she looked simply lucious wrapped around that muscular nakie chick. Yum.

Erm. *wipes drool* Seriously, though, I loved the movie. I wish I had seen it in the theatre. I'd wanted to, but hadn't gotten around to it. I highly recommend it. The little animated bits sprinkled here and there throughout the movie really enhanced it, I think, and I don't usually like gimmicks like that. I want to own it.

What did you guys think of it?

Julie Taymor is wonderful.

I can't wait for the Broadway Lion King to come into town.

I would definitely recommend renting it. I was blown away. The first time we tried to watch it, I was really distracted and didn't get into it as much, but last night I was really absorbed.

Have you ever seen the Baby Van Gogh video? My psuedo-neice, Gracie, loved that thing when she was wee, and I loved it (as did her parents) because it was a guaranteed half an hour of quiet as she watched, mesmorized by swathes of color and beautiful music.

That's kind of how I felt when I watched Frida. I was fascinated by it, utterly mesmorized by the colors and shapes and nuances of story-telling. I wasn't expecting to love it quite as much as I did, but I felt so -- this is strange -- rested after seeing it, as if my mind had been on a great vacation.

No, I haven't seen Baby Van Gogh, but it sounds like it's a must-check-out when I have little ones of my own! :) It sounds fascinating.

I know what you mean about the vacation. It was like time sort of dissipated for two hours, like I blinked once, and the movie was gone.

I loved it.

a) the Baby Einstein / Van Gogh / Shakespeare videos are a must have for everyone with little ones. Gracie's parents would never have survived those early months without them -- half an hour to yourself while not rotting your child's brain? Fan-tas-tic. You just have to not watch the stuff at the end (after the credits) where the woman who came up with the concept sucks out your soul with her blonde California-ness.

b) Tangential Frida tale -- here at the U are the Iowa Women's Archives, one of only two archives in the U.S. dedicated solely to collecting and preserving women's history. The whole thing got off the ground when Louise Noun, an elder, female politician in the state, sold one of her Frida paintings (a self-portrait) to get the money to establish the IWA foundation. When you walk into the archives, one of the first things you see is a framed poster of the painting that was sold to make the archives happen. I love that little story.

a) I have heard of Baby Einstein, and my friend [livejournal.com profile] pattisimmons swears by it. Her little one loves it so much. :)

b) That is a neat story! Thanks.

Oh yea I loved it! What a sexy and totally emotion filled movie. My mom had gone on and on about it, but it wasn't till I saw it for myself that I realized just how wonderful it was. I went and bought the dvd when it came out... but mom has borrowed it and now I am dying to get it back! :-P

Anyway, glad you enjoyed it. :-)

Hmm, maybe I'll check out the soundtrack from the library. I think it's my official favorite movie to come out of 2003.
