K5 is actively collapsing under its own weight. Most everyone of note has left. If you ever miss the diary ghetto, it's at HuSi now. If you don't, then don't even bother looking.
TIM is... uh... hmm. It's not just a game, it's a really, really BIG game. It's how we socialized online before we had the web and could leave comments in other people's diaries/journals/blogs/whatever, and with a higher barrier to entry (i.e. fewer fuckwits) than IRC.
I read about what happened at K5 (The photoshop incident) and that they're going to sponsored memberships and whatnot. Has it really gotten that bad over there?
I left because I got tired of who communista was to K5, a poor attention-whoring facsimile that got tedious to keep up, in other words.
I'm on slashnet very rarely, or IRC at all for that matter. That's more or less a time issue for me now, though. A stressful work environment and a wedding to plan somehow makes IRC less of a priority. :P
Re: K5. Who knows? Rusty's a smart guy, but he didn't want to create another Slashdot, and that's pretty much what happened to K5 while he wasn't watching (or was in denial, depending on who you ask). I don't think sponsorship will work the way he hopes it will. It (probably) won't kill the site, but it won't fix the problems either.
I still stop by there occasionally, but it doesn't really fill my online-community needs any more. HuSi and LJ don't, either (maybe I don't actually have any "online-community needs", and this is why I feel unfulfilled), but I'm busy enough with grad school these days that I don't have much choice but to restrict my interaction to established friends and the other random usernames I've developed a habit of reading.
Online we're all attention-whores. That's why we post. I'll pick on Jude, because we're having this discussion in her journal (and she knows I love her): why the hell did she post this poll except to let us, her friends and other regular readers, know that she was feeling a bit silly, and hoping we would share some silliness back with her? Attention-seeking online isn't bad, but it's hard to sustain if it's not "really" you (as opposed to an online persona) doing the seeking, and/or you suspect it's the other folks' personae (instead of "really" them) giving it.
K5 is overpopulated by people who haven't outgrown the idea of keeping an online persona. My guess is this happens somewhere around 40000 users on a site like that. I wonder if I can get a paper out of that...
Oh, you can pick on me all you want, because even the Pope knows that I'm an attention whore. :) The difference with me is that I'm an attention whore 24/7, in person AND online, bizzatch!
Besides, YOU LOVE IT. I am an all-day-all-night Fun Machine.
Also, you're better at attention-whoring than I am, so I do it vicariously by posting in your journals instead of saying anything fun in my own. You and your brother will both always respond to me. Always. I dare either of you to try not to get the last word. :)
Yeah, I admit that I can be an attention-whore. I don't want to be one of those in denial. But my whoring method has changed once 'Nista was no longer a "character" in K5's cast of characters.
I've actually found a lot of people on here from K5, and a couple have found me. I like it better here, I don't feel like I have something to prove or any expectations to fulfill. I got the journal back in 2001 when I still posted on K5, hence the retention of the name. Since then I've just been too cheap to change it, and if I was going to change it...I don't know what I'd change it to.
I say go for it. But this is from a guy who hasn't convinced himself to spend the money so he can have more than 3 icons, so my advice might be suspect. Also I only get paid once a month, and that makes me feel like anyone who gets a more frequent paycheck is obviously wealthy.
And in a while, when you and Jen are LEGALLY MARRIED (it will happen, even if we have to elect humanbeatbox president!), are you going to call it a corporate merger also and be Jude from Jencorp, or Jude from Jude-n-Jencorp, or Jencorp from Jude, or what? :)
That's a good question. She currently has working mailboxes at judecorp, so I guess that makes her Jen-from-Judecorp, at least right now. But I suppose after we elect Chuck to high office, we can become Judifercorp.

Were you on TIM, too, or am I getting my online communities mixed up again?
