In which he whines. Again.
May. 10th, 2004 11:03 pmMoving sucks. Like, a lot. That's my brilliant statement of the day. Thank you, drive through.
Moving sucks because there is too much to do in the amount of time it takes to do it. And then you're still working while you're doing it, because, well, you need the money. For moving. And you're leaving your job, so your workdays are stressful with the wrapping up. And there are people to see, and things to arrange, and supplies to acquire, and then packing and hauling and all of that good stuff. Whee.
I had to schedule my licensing exam. I found out that the only testing center in Columbus (Columbus State CC) is open on Saturdays and Sundays, which means I don't need to take time off of work. I'm taking the test this Saturday, at 9am. Of course,
goddamnelf will be visiting here at this time, so I do hope he doesn't hate me for ditching him for a couple of hours. Hopefully I will pass and we will have something to celebrate! (Now I guess I should probably read some notes or something.) I wanted to take it this week but I couldn't take it on a weekday, so I didn't have much choice.
A while back, I reserved a rental truck and tow thinger for the car, to the tune of $980. This weekend I started getting quotes for those you-pack-it places. ABF sent me a quote of $1150. Now, gas is currently $2/gallon, and a rental truck gets about 9 mpg. So at 770 miles or so, we're looking at nearly $200 in gas. $200 IN GAS!!! That makes ABF cheaper, /and/ we don't have to drive the freaking truck. Jen made a fancy-schmancy 3D model and it looks like the ABF truck is only 5 cubic feet smaller than the rental truck. Score. If we use less space, we save money.
The only problem is that our street is permit parking only, so we now have to find a way to park this beast of a truck. I guess we'll have to call the city. More crap to do. And I need to cancel the rental truck. Somewhere in there we'll get around to, you know, packing. And did I mention the licensing exam? Yikes.
I sent resumes to about 15 jobs today. The actual COST of living in Boston is starting to weigh heavily on my mind. We'll be paying $550 more per month in rent alone, even though we got a deal on this apartment. So I guess we, like, need jobs and stuff. Blarg. Being a grownup is hard work.

Date: 2004-05-11 03:35 am (UTC)I've never "itemized" my deductions - I just did taxact.com and they filed everything for me.
I wasn't technically moving for a job either, then. I mean...I moved...and I had a job....just like you.
Itemize you puss.

Date: 2004-05-11 06:26 am (UTC)I used about 5.5 feet in the truck, but could have probably fit into 4 if I had stacked to the ceiling. It was totally cheaper than renting a truck. I would use them again. I think the minimum you can use is 6 feet...and I really didn't have that much furniture. You guys could probably do it in 10 feet like you said.
I love you! Meeep!

Date: 2004-05-13 02:46 pm (UTC)We actually had to cancel our reservation with ABF because ABF has this weird rule about how they won't leave a truck unattended in the Boston area, so the driver has to be there while you unload it. That's all well and good, but you only get an hour to unload it or else they start charging you $27 for each additional 15 minutes. There is no way we would be able to unload the truck in an hour.
That, and we live on a permit-parking street so it seemed like too much of a hassle to go with ABF. It was just so stressful and didn't seem worth it.
I'm glad you had a good experience, though. Thanks for sharing that information with me. :)
