I went on a date tonight! (Well, a pseudo-date, because I'm still faithful to my one boy love [livejournal.com profile] whod81.) My local buddy [livejournal.com profile] folkyboy inherited two free tickets to the Boston Gay Men's Chorus performance of music by Elton John and Freddie Mercury. It was so fantastic and wonderful, even if we were in the very last row of the balcony and it was so steep that we were afraid to stand up! The BGMC is outstanding and the energy was so great, especially because it's Pride weekend and all of that. THANKS, FOLKY!

Side note for [livejournal.com profile] calledmara and [livejournal.com profile] prettyvacantone: I wanted you both to know that it is not just the Columbus Women's Chorus who inserts the element of Cheese into informal chorus concerts. There were /several/ dancing numbers tonight, including costume changes, /and/ there was clapping and drumming. (Although I doubt they did "women's rituals" during practice, and I wonder if they give each other back rubs.)

Anyway, it was really awesome. They performed "Hakuna Matata" and "The Circle of Life" from The Lion King, which kind of surprised me (though it shouldn't have, because HELLO, it's a musical!), and some songs from Aida, and lots of good 70s pop. There was even a little parade of different Elton costumes that was fabulous. The only thing that wasn't fabulous was the group of tipsy people in front of me that were obnoxious. Aah well - if I was more of my father's daughter I would have bopped them on the head with my program!

And Folky and I gabbed and gabbed about musicals and folk music and were also very catty toward other people in the audience and on the street. It's so hysterical talking to him about music (err, folk music of course) because he knows absolutely everything and owns every single CD. It is so crazy! He's always like, "Well do you know [blahblah] by [blah]? It is on [blah] CD and I own it and I love it and I have the t-shirt!" It is TEH AWESOME.

I need to start volunteering somewhere so I can feel like a part of the community again. I also need to work harder on locating lots of free stuff, because there is definitely free stuff to be found all of the time. Must take advantage! Also, I think I want to spend some time getting in touch with my girly side. It's kind of fun, actually, to have, you know, boobs. Sometimes. (Though I still have no clue what I should wear to my [livejournal.com profile] smurfbrother's wedding thinger. Suggestions?)

hahaha you are jealous of my folk abilities!

you'll have to come to the Boston Folk Festival with me so we can be scary Dar fans and get all giddy :)

Well, you DO know I love Dar. Because we're best friends who ate dinner together and all of that. Blah blah Dar blah blah blah. And Jen likes Dar too so maybe you would actually get to meet her, because she really does exist I promise.

I am excited about living in New England again because there are SO MANY folk festivals, which is just great. You like a lot more folkies than I do, though, but we can definitely get giddy about DAR.

glad you are feeling better. Glad to know cheese permeates all queer choruses throughout our nation. Giving Brandie backrubs made me feel kinda dirty, but in a good way.

So if two hippie kids were driving from Columbus to your house how would they do that? Cause if anyone has a worse sense of direction than me it's my friend Andrea.

I wish I could have rubbed Brandie's back in a dirty, dirty way! *jealous*

I will email you with directions, mama. Are you and Andrea okay with paying tolls, or do you want to avoid as many tolls as possible? (You will have to pay SOME tolls, it's utterly unavoidable.)

I guess it all depends. What's the time difference between the two routes? How much toll money are you talking? Is one route more scenic than the other?

There's not really a terrible time difference. The fastest way is 71N to 271 N to 90E (aka New York State Thruway, which becomes the Mass Pike) to 93 S to us. All of 90 is a toll road, and I think it comes out to like $15 in tolls or so.

To avoid most tolls, you could go 71N to 76E to 80E. You stay on 80E for a long time and then get on 81N to 84E to 90E (Mass Pike), then 93S to us. The only tolls this way are one bridge in Pennsylvania, and then the Mass Pike - about $5 worth.

I can give you either set of directions. Scenic isn't really a variable. The one on 90E all the way is less rural/farm than 80E. 80 goes through rural Pennsylvania all through the mountains. 90 goes through Buffalo, Syracuse, Albany, etc.

Maybe we should check out straight people choirs to see if they too are that cheesy. The whole "women's rituals" things creeped me out. I felt like any minute we were going to start eating chocolate, bitching about cramps and smile lines, and braid each other's hair.

There wouldn't have been a lot of hair braiding in the Altos, dear - maybe in the girly girly Soprano 1s! ;)

And we should definitely check out straight choruses. ARE there straight choruses? What are straight people? Mommy?

Yeah, I know of a straight chorus! Based in Northampton, of all places!
