City Year is an AmeriCorps program. (AmeriCorps is kind of like the Peace Corps but for service projects in the United States.) Young people ages 16-24 can join the program and do a year of service in one of several sites in the US. They mostly work with elementary and middle school students doing work around social justice, the environment, diversity, domestic violence, and that sort of thing. As compensation, they get a meagre stiped for 10 months and then on completion of the program they get $5000 for college. If they don't have a high school diploma, City Year helps them get their GED.

You can find more specific information, like press releases, at www.cityyear.org. But in a nutshell, City Year is a service corps of young people who work with little kids in major cities.
