I am so confused with this whole jobhunt process.

I gave a follow up phone call to the program director type person that I spoke to on that really positive phone interview from last week. I was immediately off-put because the woman began flubbing words and acting really weird, putting me on hold for long periods of time and then stating she needed to "check on something." She also sounded quite nervous when I said I was just "checking on things."

Eventually she came back and stated that she had spoken to so many people that she'd forgotten who was who, and that she was looking for the resumes that she passed on to her Director. She said she wasn't positive, but was pretty sure mine wasn't one of the ones she passed on.

WTF? This is the same woman who told me on the phone that she was passing on four resumes and mine was definitely going to be one of them. I am so freaking confused by this. I suppose it's possible that she's mistaken and she /did/ pass my resume on, but since she sounded so flustered (and since I haven't heard anything from the Director) I'm inclined to doubt it.

People doing interviews are /so/ weird. Why on earth would you tell someone that you were definitely recommending them to the next level if you weren't sure, or had no intention of doing so? Argh!

That's exactly the problem t had with the Apple process. He kept getting comments like they were fairly certain they wanted him, only in the end to not get it and not be told why not. I found it insufferably rude!

It /is/ rude!

I mean, everyone knows that jobhunting sucks, and that there are a lot of people that need to be turned down. And that's cool. But you just don't go around TELLING people that you're doing one thing and then do the opposite. It's just bad leadership.

BLAH!

While job hunting, an old boss of mine who I interviewed with went, in one week's time, from "This resume looks great, I'm going to sneak you in under the radar and we'll have you in here in a few days" to "It looks like we have to interview people. I'm going to interview 3 people, you included, and give you the job" to "You didn't make the cut to be interviewed, sorry."

Hang in there, something will turn up.

HR people are a special breed. Professionally, treat them like either aliens or puppies. You'd be surprised how far you can get.

This wasn't an HR person, though. She was a Program Manager. Social Services are weird, dude - it's not like your job hunt at all. For starters, there's about a kajillion candidates vying for one position that pays less than a living wage. And then they want to ask you lots of personal, introspective questions like, "Tell me your biggest failure," instead of stuff like, "Why are you interested in this position?"

It's maddening.
