I am so tired of hearing about "values" and "faith" and "patriotism" and all of that. No, really.

I hate pandering. No matter how necessary I know it is in the long run.

In other news, tonight I had dinner at Carrie and William's. Much cheese was eaten. MUCH cheese.

I think he did a good job, too. This wasn't really a reflection on HIM so much as to the necessity to make those things the focus of this presidential campaign.

I wholeheartedly agree with you. I also hate it when political candidates say "middle class" when they mean "working class."

Well, in this case, I'm not sure that Kerry /meant/ working class. I mean, sure, I'm sure any tax cuts he's talking about will also benefit working class Americans, but I really think he's speaking to the middle (and upper-middle) classes here... the ones who often /feel/ like they're most left out of governmental breaks (even though they're not).

Perhaps I should amend that statement: I hate it when political candidates speak only to the middle class, and barely if at all acknowledge the working class verbally.

That's what I was thinking. Talking about how he was immoral, faithless, and unpatriotic probably wouldn't have scored many points. ;)

From: [identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com
Well yeah, but why are we even talking about that stuff? Why have random ideas like "patriotism" and "family values" become the winning points of our executive branch?

Date: 2004-07-30 12:33 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] drainbead.livejournal.com
Well, the president is our country's biggest and greatest servant, so patriotism should be at least somewhat important. For the most part, I think it's a buzzword that has lost all meaning; anyone who thinks that George W. Bush is patriotic has no sense of what that word entails.

The "values," on the other hand, I found to be a subtle nose-thumbing at the Republican family values platform, by which they mean bigotry and denial of rights to appease the religious people. The "family values" that Kerry espoused last night was more like respecting the troubles of the average family in America, and doing something to fix their biggest problems, rather than trumping up bigoted non-issues in the name of preserving the family.

Faith is something I wish had nothing to do with the process, though. It's "faith," in one of its many incarnations, that causes the problem with "values."

that's it.

He wasn't saying "I'm Patriotic, look at that," He was saying "I'm Patriotic, and when I say Patriotic, I don't mean Obedient."

He was saying, "I have values," not "I hate minorities."

He was saying "I have faith" not "My religion's better than yours."

He was showing how he was better than Bush in all the ways the Republicans try to make important.

Oh yes, I absolutely agree with you. Like I said above somewhere else, I think he did the right thing, and I think he did it well.

I just wish that those buzzwords /weren't/ the crux of this election, you know? That maybe there would be some, you know, real issues?

From: [identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com
I think it was a good speech, because I think it really did service to beat the Republicans at their own game. I think the current administration has worked very hard to get the country fired up about a few catch-phrases so that they aren't thinking about all of the 'real' issues and how FUBAR'd they are.

I agree that our President needs to be patriotic in the truest sense of the word. I also believe that everyone, including the President, needs to have his/her own values and should live by them.

I just am getting quite afraid that we will have an entire election year and presidential campaign without more than the tiniest mention of some /real/ issues - things like poverty, healthcare, human rights... little things like that.

Date: 2004-07-30 12:24 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com
Well, no. Unfortunately, these buzzwords are the "issues" of the current political climate and therefore the current presidential campaign.

I just think it's annoying that most of the speech was spent "verifying" Kerry's faith, patriotism, and family values (not to mention he volunteered for Vietnam... did he mention he volunteered? you know he volunteered right? argh!) and only a very short time on, you know, what he hopes to accomplish as president.

The problem with these values is that they are better when they aren't discussed.. Anyones values and faith should be obvious without discussion. As for Patriotism. Its reached a crazy new height. I saw someone with a 9/11 LICENSE PLATE. As though somehow by posessing such an object you avenge all the evil in the world.

(p.s. Love your new icon)

Dear God - a 9/11 license plate? That makes me want to throw up.

I remember when I was in Ohio and all of these people at a Wal-Mart were snatching up all of these "Remember the Towers" bumper stickers. And all I could think of was, "I bet they've never even SEEN them."

Hey, thanks for the postings!

Unfortunately the former is too far out and the latter requires an LICSW, which I do not have (yet). But I really appreciate you looking out for me! :)
