Reporting for duty?
Jul. 30th, 2004 12:13 amI am so tired of hearing about "values" and "faith" and "patriotism" and all of that. No, really.
I hate pandering. No matter how necessary I know it is in the long run.
In other news, tonight I had dinner at Carrie and William's. Much cheese was eaten. MUCH cheese.

Date: 2004-07-30 12:33 pm (UTC)The "values," on the other hand, I found to be a subtle nose-thumbing at the Republican family values platform, by which they mean bigotry and denial of rights to appease the religious people. The "family values" that Kerry espoused last night was more like respecting the troubles of the average family in America, and doing something to fix their biggest problems, rather than trumping up bigoted non-issues in the name of preserving the family.
Faith is something I wish had nothing to do with the process, though. It's "faith," in one of its many incarnations, that causes the problem with "values."
that's it.
Date: 2004-07-30 01:50 pm (UTC)He was saying, "I have values," not "I hate minorities."
He was saying "I have faith" not "My religion's better than yours."
He was showing how he was better than Bush in all the ways the Republicans try to make important.

Date: 2004-07-31 11:48 pm (UTC)I just wish that those buzzwords /weren't/ the crux of this election, you know? That maybe there would be some, you know, real issues?

Date: 2004-07-31 11:51 pm (UTC)I agree that our President needs to be patriotic in the truest sense of the word. I also believe that everyone, including the President, needs to have his/her own values and should live by them.
I just am getting quite afraid that we will have an entire election year and presidential campaign without more than the tiniest mention of some /real/ issues - things like poverty, healthcare, human rights... little things like that.

Date: 2004-07-30 12:24 pm (UTC)I just think it's annoying that most of the speech was spent "verifying" Kerry's faith, patriotism, and family values (not to mention he volunteered for Vietnam... did he mention he volunteered? you know he volunteered right? argh!) and only a very short time on, you know, what he hopes to accomplish as president.

Date: 2004-07-31 11:47 pm (UTC)I remember when I was in Ohio and all of these people at a Wal-Mart were snatching up all of these "Remember the Towers" bumper stickers. And all I could think of was, "I bet they've never even SEEN them."

Date: 2004-07-31 03:08 am (UTC)Unfortunately the former is too far out and the latter requires an LICSW, which I do not have (yet). But I really appreciate you looking out for me! :)
