So my Mom called to ask me, "Are you going to hate me if I move?" I think that, more than anything else she or I could say, sums up the root of my worries for her. It's not about me or anyone else, really. Is /she/ going to hate her if she moves? I jokingly said, "Yes," and she almost started to cry. I'm worried about her. She told me today that they put an offer on a second house (the first one didn't work out) and they are going to accept the counter offer. This is all moving very quickly.

I suppose this means that Christmas is FUBARed. The plan was Thanksgiving with Jen's family (which, as you know, has also FUBARed) and then Christmas with mine. Christmas is always kind of wonky in my family because I have to go to a million houses - Christmas Eve at Mom's, Christmas morning with Dad, then grandparents, then off to Aunt and Uncle's house for dinner in the afternoon. It was hard enough coordinating holidays with two parents who were 30 minutes apart. I told her that I wouldn't "hate" her for moving, but that I could honestly say I did not know when we would be able to spend a holiday with her.

It just all seems so surreal. All she would talk about when I told her we were thinking of moving here, and then when we actually /did/ move here, was how excited she was that we finally would be close again and could see each other and spend time together and blah blah blah. I know it's not all about me, but how does this translate into 'Okay, we're moving to South Carolina soon.'? Weird. Apparently her 13-year-old neighbor scolded her about moving away right after I moved back to the area. I have a 13-year-old defender!

I guess we can try to do SC visiting whenever we're trying to do FL visiting, but that would definitely involve some logistics and planning. And serious vacation time. Now I wish I was in academia.

I suppose this clears the way for us to freely move "far away" again without hearing anything from that side of the family, right? (And yes, I know we moved to Boston because we thought that was where we were going to stay forever and ever amen, but now I'm not sure that's terribly likely or do-able.)

I find it very interesting that your mother calls you regularly and keeps you posted about all this, but I haven't heard a word from her since the wedding reception.

Hunh. That /is/ very strange.

I think it is because she currently feels VERY guilty towards me about this, as if I somehow think she is personally slighting me by moving away. You know, typical Your Mother.

Also, she has fish for me. She keeps trying to get me to come down and get it. Maybe I will go tomorrow.

p.s. You should not complain that Your Mother does not call you regularly. You are only missing out on all that good crying and discussion of Mem's bowels.

You can come visit! Apparently one of Mom's neighbors went on some northwestern fishing trip and brought back all of this salmon that they caught up there, and soon we will have some!

COME GET FISH.

You know, MA to SC is such a long drive... you should plan to stay in NC for the night to and fro... ;-)

Ha, it's not quite halfway, though. ;)

But when they move, and when we eventually come visit, you and R can come down to SC and we can tool around Myrtle Beach and make fun of the old people!

Dear gods, but I would not want to do that. Well, scratch that. I'm used to having 3+ xmases, but usually in the same state or neighboring states. I don't know if I can do 4 different states!
