Grandma's birthday
Aug. 27th, 2004 10:00 pmI love that when you eat lobster, your hands smell like salt water for a good long time, no matter how many times you wash them. Mmmm.
Dinner with Grandma was a good time. I did get stuck in some hellacious traffic on 93, but I managed to ditch work at 4:15 so it worked out okay. I stopped and got her a little potted plant, but it felt really small when I got to her house and saw the ginormous bouquet of flowers that my brother got for her. They were really beautiful and I know she was blown away.
Dad and I took her to this restaurant in Nasonville (RI) called Mama McGhee's. We'd never been, Dad and I, but Grandma had gone and really liked it. The food was really good, and totally reasonable. It's so funny to leave Boston and see reasonable prices for things. ;) We waited in the bar for our table, and my grandmother got her usual (a fuzzy navel, she is so freaking cute). I mentioned to the bartender that it was her birthday, and the hostess heard me, so she arranged for the singing/free cake.
I would have paid 87724389754787432 dollars for the look on my grandmother's face when all of the servers started clapping, and they brought out the cake, and some guy in a parrot costume sang "Happy Birthday" to her. Her eyes were SO big. It was awesome.
Ya know, you only turn 82 once. And she is an amazing woman. Right now, she is single-handedly taking care of my grandfather (who had a nasty fall on Saturday and is recovering, and is 87) and his brother (who is 89 and on oxygen, among other things) all by herself, juggling their doctor appointments and keeping the household up. Tonight I said, "Wow, I sure hope I get old like you do."
Can you even imagine? Happy birthday, Grandma.
