I am so pissed right now.

In the continuing saga of the Missing Netflix Movies, I came home today and was unsurprised to /not/ see my second replacement movie. Since the absolute LAST thing I want to do is have to report a missing replacement movie, I decided I would go downstairs and ask my landlord if he had seen any movies.

[A little sidenote about the mail in our building: Since our building is one enormous house converted into three apartments, there is one mail slot in the front door. The postal carrier puts all of the mail in the slot, and it's kind of an unspoken house policy that whoever comes home first sorts the mail. The landlords' stuff goes in front of their door, and the two upstairs apartments' stuff go on the stairs. It's also an unspoken house policy that all of the junk/bulk mail stays downstairs and the landlords throw it all out.]

So I went downstairs and talked to Landlord Jon. I brought down a Netflix movie and I asked him if maybe he'd seen my movies... since they have bulk postage and maybe they got mixed in with the flyers and other junk mail. I explained that I have had a subscription for a million years and have lost four movies in the last month. He said that he has not had any of my movies in his sorted mail or the junk mail. I started to complain about how our postal delivery service sucks and is taking all of my mail, and we chatted a little bit about the postal service. And I mentioned that I didn't want to have to report another movie missing, because this was a replacement movie for two movies that were missing last week, and I was babbling, and went on about how they sent two replacement movies and I only got one and blah blah my life sucks.

And he says, "Are you talking about yesterday? Because I know for a fact that you got two movies yesterday. I put two movies on the step for you yesterday." He said he never remembers stuff like that, but that he thought it was weird that they would send two movies in two envelopes, and was pondering why they don't use one and save postage and all of that. So I ask him, for clarification, "I had two movies yesterday and you put two movies on the stairs?" He said yes.

[Another sidebar about mail: I know that my landlord puts the mail on the first floor stairs, but sometimes our mail is upstairs in front of our door (on the second floor). I always thought it was really nice of our downstairs neighbor(s) to bring our mail up for us, so I started bringing their mail up, too.]

I know for a fact that yesterday, our mail was in front of our door on the second floor. Which means my downstairs neighbor brought our mail up. WHICH MEANS MY DOWNSTAIRS NEIGHBOR IS STEALING MY MOVIES.

I am so livid about this. I have no idea WHY he would be stealing my movies. I have no idea why he would steal some and not others (especially since you can't see what they are). My landlord didn't have really great things to say about my downstairs neighbor and painted him as a really passive-aggressive guy, but I don't know what Jen or I could have done to piss him off enough to steal our mail. And is he stealing other mail?

I guess I have to confront him, tonight. Hopefully he will give me back the replacement movie so I don't get reamed by Netflix. I suppose I will just explain that I am getting in trouble with Netflix and ask if he's gotten any of my movies "by mistake." My landlord seems to think that I need to frame it as innocently as possible in order to avoid making him mad. My landlord said that I should not hint AT ALL that I think he has any movies, and just ask him to be on the lookout in the future. He says that he won't come up with any of my movies because that would admit that he took them. But I don't know if I can do that. I mean, I /need/ that movie back, and I /know/ that the movie made it into our building. I can't report it "lost in the mail" because it is lost in my building... and I just REALLY don't want to have to report a replacement movie missing. That's three movies in one week, and four movies in one month.

The whole thing makes me want to throw up.

Did you file your USPS report via phone? When I did mine, they asked, point blank, "do you suspect your carrier took this?"

up to you whether or not you want to do personal confrontation or just tell the USPS that you suspect your neighbor has done it.

The Passive Agressive And Effective way to handle: Write a memo to all tenants (including landlord) of building saying that your mail has gone missing, so everyone should be careful, and be vigilant about reporting missing/stolen mail. Include info on how to file reports, and personal testimonials about how easy it is to file them.

I did file my postal complaint over the phone, and they never asked me anything about suspecting anyone. All they did, really, was take my name and number and say someone would be getting back to me. Which never happened.

Ugh. Suck-tastic.

I'm not sure if you're looking for advice here, but if I were you, I think I'd approach it kind of halfway.

Go to the downstairs guy, and ask him if he'd possibly gotten one of your movies mixed in with his stuff yesterday - ramble a bit about how worried you are about getting in trouble with Netflix, and mention that your landlord /thought/ he'd seen to movies for you yesterday, but wasn't sure, so you figured you'd ask if maybe he'd gotten your movie by mistake.

That lets him know that you're pretty sure the movie was in the building, but gives him room to return it while still saving face, and without you accusing him of anything.

But ugh. I'd be SO ANGRY.

Well, thankfully this was just another instance where I overreacted. Hooray!

(Unless he's lying to me. I shall keep him in my sights from now on.)

I have no idea why he would steal some and not others (especially since you can't see what they are).

Because it's like Christmas every time he opens your mail! I wonder if he feels like he's getting a raw deal now that he's unwrapping duplicate movies?

I don't think you should accuse him of anything, just next time you see him in passing ask him, "Is there anything you would like to see? Because I'm about to place another Netflix order."

Seriously though, I hope you've made arrangements with your landlord to hold your mail from now on.

The whole thing makes me want to throw up.

I have a friend who works at Netflix. Let me talk to her tomorrow and see what she has for advice. I know it's not her department, but she's been with them a loooong time, and may have some insight.
