Surprise Birthday Party
Oct. 10th, 2004 11:29 pmYesterday, both Jennifer and I were surprised. Verily.
You see, the plan (as we knew it) was to go to a restaurant in Central Square to celebrate
Ms. Shani's birthday with The Usual Suspects. Shani's birthday just passed and
Carrie was planning - and you know, that just made sense. A couple of days ago,
Jenn called to ask if I wanted her to come pick me up so we could ride to the restaurant together. She said that it would be a good idea to carpool so there would be less designated drivers required. I thought this was very silly because I was going to take the T (no driver required), but hey, free ride. So I said okay. Since my Jennifer was working, she was going to come from work.
Yesterday I was still feeling sick, but I promised my dad I would hang out with him, so I drove down to RI, went to lunch with my dad and grandparents, and then tooled around with my dad for a while. He tried to get me to go have a drink with him (we'd had beer earlier, but he wanted a drink) and I declined because of Shani's supposed birthday. Also, I was still feeling crappy. So I left, and Jenn and
Wiley picked me up.
They then drove in completely the wrong direction. So I was like, "Umm, aren't you guys going to the highway?" and Wiley mentioned that there had been a venue change. I gotta give the guy credit for thinking on his feet, because when I asked why he said that some crappy band was playing at the restaurant and no one liked them. At this point I panicked, because dear gods, Jen was going to go there from work and no one would be there! I asked if someone had notified Jen, and Jenn said that Shani was picking Jen up from work. And I thought that was totally bizarre, but hey, they're weird people. ;)
So we start driving to JP, and I ask where we're going and all Wiley will say is, "Some place in JP." And I am now very confused but decide instead to talk all about how I feel like crap and need a nap. We pull up to the Milky Way and here I am still thinking it's Shani's party. I find it funny because *I* really wanted to have my Jennifer's birthday party at the Milky Way (but we decided against it), and then I'm glad I didn't because two Milky Way parties in a week's time would just be overkill. So we go inside and there are lots of balloons and cake, and I see that the cake says "Jude, Jennifer, and Shani" and I'm all happy thinking 'Awwwh, that's sweet that they put our names on it too' and then I find out it's our party and it was all a ruse! I will blame my lack of noticing on being sick. Yeah.
So it was a bang-up time with lots of booze, lots of pizza, presents, and candlepin bowling which I have never done before but really like. Also lesbians, including one totally disgustingly hot bartender. And lots of fun people were there, like Shani and Matt, Dory and Mark, Jenn and Wiley, Carrie and William, Stephie and Joe, the other Stephie,
Jess and
Chris,
Amy,
Liz and
Matt, and Kristine. I got pretty intoxicated (but without consequences of any kind, which is good), won a game of candlepin, and forgot I was sick for a while (which was quite nice). Yay!
And it was all so very sweet of everyone to arrange this whole thing, and to pitch in for it, and to get presents and balloons and cake. I feel really fortunate to have nice people around me who would do such a thing for my Jennifer and me, and had a teriffic time (and I know Jen did, too). My only regret is that this was /exactly/ the kind of 30th birthday party that I wanted to throw for my best girl, and I just wasn't able to afford it or pull it off. So I guess I'm a little sad that I wasn't able to give her the party she deserves and other people had to pick up the slack for me. But I'm happy that she got to have a big happy Milky Way party after all.
Now I have to write all the thank you cards!
(p.s. There is still time to order from my Wish List.)
