Today was such a waste of a day for my productivity. Because of the holiday, only ONE CHILD showed up for my playgroup this morning. Out of nine. Playgroup runs for 2.5 hours, with about 45 minutes of set up and clean up before and after. So it's a HUGE billing suck. With nine kids in a group, I can bill for 7 of them (they are in the Early Intervention program) and 2 of them pay out of pocket from the community. So billing-wise, I bill 7 kids at 2.5 hours each - but for the purposes of my personal productivity, I have to multiply that amount by 0.3. Considering that it takes about 3.5 hours total to do group, I actually have to have at least 4 EI children show up to get as much productivity as I actually spend doing group. Usually that isn't a problem.

Because I only had one child, the school decided it would be better to put him into someone else's group so he wouldn't be playing all by himself. So all of a sudden I had NO kids, and three hours to kill. On top of that, I missed playgroup on Tuesday because I had to go to a mandatory training.

The bottom line of all of this is that group nets me about 9 hours a week of productivity. So I'm automatically out 9 hours (out of a required 24/week). AND I had an assessment on Monday that no-showed (2-2.6 hours, depending). My productivity is going to be SOOO bad this week.

I thought I was in pretty good shape to make my productivity quota and get a $500 bonus after the holidays, but I think this week is going to set me back in ways I cannot possibly make up. Which sucks, because I could really use that money to pay off holiday bills. Le sigh.

I really wish everything wasn't about money. I wish I could do my job and help families without worrying about billing, I wish I could look for jobs without worrying about paychecks, and I wish I could have babies with wild abandon without worrying about how to pay for their care. I just want to get things done, not worry about the FINANCES of it all!

In other news, I went to visit the little privately-run gym (for women) that is near my work (and therefore a mile from my apartment). It looks like a pretty neat place, but really I just want to take the classes (aerobics, cardiokickboxing, yoga). It's $99 to sign up and then $35/month - no contract. I'm trying to decide if a) we can afford it, and b) I would actually show up and therefore make it worth my while. Thoughts?

We made a quite delicious dinner tonight. I love love LOVE Bob Evans's Wildfire Barbecue sauce. But now we are ALL OUT. Will someone in Cbus go to Bob's and mail me some? I will pay you! Otherwise I will totally go through Wildfire withdrawal!

Sheesh...productivity sucks beyond belief. I remember it well...good luck!

Don't assume you'll miss the bonus yet. Holiday time is crisis time, unfortunately, and crisises suck but are billing goldmines. It's awful to think that way, but it was how I always looked at them.

I don't really work in a particularly crisis-oriented job. I mean, it could happen a /little/ bit, but a crisis in the afternoon means I have to cancel a bunch of regularly scheduled people to take care of it... so I don't really end up with extra time. :)

Sounds like a lot to drop per month for a place to stay fit, but I've never joined a health club around here... do you have benefits with your employer or health plan which provide discounted rates for certain fitness clubs? Also I think if you have a more specific exercise you'd like to explore (yoga, jazzercise, mumblety-peg) individual classes are less expensive, frequent and loosely structured at business that specialize in those disciplines. Also paying per visit might be less expensive. Also, you may have an opportunity to use the gymnasium at your alma mater for a pittance.
There's also the idea of getting an inexpensive used bicycle and some warm clothing :)

1. My alma mater is in New York. I think the commute alone would jack up the prices. ;) (Except for BU, where I went for a year. And BU doesn't give anyone anything for cheap. Ha!)

2. It's a lot of money on one hand, but when I was taking martial arts I actually paid almost twice as much per month.

3. My health insurance will reimburse me $150/year. Which would cover the ridiculous sign-up fee.

4. The problem with shopping around to find someplace cheaper is that I won't really find anyplace closer. And I know myself well enough to know that if I have to travel 30 minutes to get somewhere to exercise, I will find more reasons not to go. Which is why this place, which is next door to my job, is so tempting. If I never get home first, I won't be tempted to /stay/ home. ;)

5. I'd actually love to do a "pay by the class" thing... but even if a place was $5/class, I would be paying less money this way as long as I went twice a week.

Can you imagine BU giving ANYTHING away? Let alone use of their fancy exercise equipment? The thought alone is laughable. Heck, I'm not even a member of their Alumni Association, because you have to pay for that, too! ARGH!

When do I get to see your hippie ass?

Um, why are you punished when parents don't bring their kids? This won't help for now, but maybe bring this up as a problem.

I'm not sure about the billing process, but it doesn't make for productive employees when something that occurs that totally isn't their fault fucks with their bonus.

I searched for the damn sauce online. You can't get it! Hope everything works out.

Date: 2004-11-12 04:08 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com
Well, I'm not "punished" per se. But the world of clinical social work tends to be entirely based on billing. If you can bill for it, it counts. If not, tough luck. For example, I spend at least 15 minutes between clients driving from house to house. A couple of my clients require a good 25 minutes of transportation time. But my agency can only bill for face-to-face contact... so all of that travel time doesn't really count.

If I have 4 one-hour visits in the same town, it will probably take me 5 hours to complete them (15 minutes in between each). So even though I worked for 5 hours, only 4 hours count for productivity. That's just the way it goes.

Likewise, any time I spend on the telephone, doing research, completing paperwork, making charts, filing documents, writing letters, coordinating with other service providers, etc. are not part of productivity. Which means that I often work more than 40 hours/week to get that stuff done. Yesterday I stayed at work until 6:45 digging through bags of clothing looking for good clothes to give to one of my families.

My target goal is 24 hours/week in productivity. Out of a normal 40-hour workweek, that's not usually a problem. But when there are a lot of no-shows, cancellations, trainings, holidays, or other things, it just isn't feasible.

Do you work for the government?

Date: 2004-11-12 01:15 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com
No, I work for a private non-profit agency that is overseen by the government. My agency takes its orders from the Department of Public Health.

Why?

From: [identity profile] gabriellag.livejournal.com
Just the beuracracy or however you spell it. It just seems silly not to reward someone for the work they do.

No offense intended.

From: [identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com
The word you're looking for is: bureaucracy. (Like 'bureau' with the 'cracy' at the end!)

Unfortunately, it's not my agency per se that is doing this. I know from my Director on down, all of the people in charge of my particular program wish the job could /not/ be centered around billing. It's really just the nature of the beast in clinical work a lot of the time.

My agency does a pretty good job letting us all know how valued we are and what good work we do. It's actually the best place I've ever worked at in terms of workplace morale. And it's not like they're going to fire me or give me a write-up for poor productivity (unless I just wasn't showing up for work or something) like a lot of jobs do. The bonus is just an extra perk - most places don't do that, either.

It's just a different set of work rules. What do you do for work?

Nooooooooooooo! Curves = BAAAAAD.

The dude who owns Curves is a huge conservative who takes a lot of the money he makes off of women and pours it into anti-choice organizations.

Bad bad bad bad bad.

Agreed! Curves = bad stuff.

Have you checked out the Quincy YMCA? Have you checked out this Planet Fitness in N Quincy which I am a member of for $10 a month but they've never seen me

Come to think of it if you can claim you're S. Gentry you can have my gym membership for $10 a month. Because, you know, I am THE LAZY as well as THE FAT.

From: [identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com
HA HA HA, I don't think you're THE FAT. THE LAZY, well, that's for you to decide I guess.

Where is this Planet Fitness? I was really going for the hard core convenience factor but North Quincy is certainly close enough to go after work without too much hassle.

(But I could never claim to be S. Gentry. You're too legendary!!)

beyond the owner's horrible horrible anti-choice agenda, Curves just doesn't scale. It's all resistance based training and is only going to help you out if you do absolutely no exercise to begin with. Even if that's the case, you'll plateau after about 2-3 months of regular resistance based exercise and will require higher weights/intensity which the Curves formula can't provide.
Judayyy, $35/month is a good rate around here. If you can find anyplace where taking individual classes costs less, you're a better woman than I am. (other than the L Street which is $50/year but not convenient for most people.) Anyhow, the way I look at it is that if you're spending money and money is tight, you're going to want to get your money's worth, which means you'll go to class more often. right? right.
Also, if I get my homework done like a good little girl, mebbie we can hang out this weekend?

Well yeah, I usually ignore the fact that they're a shitty exercise plan because I'm so focused on the HATE HATE HATE. But you're right about the exercise, too. No love for the Curves.

This weekend... what are you doing tonight (Saturday)? Jen gets off work at 6 and I am going to pick her up at JFK/UMASS (the Ashmont line is down this weekend) which is right in your neck of the woods. Have you ever eaten at that Donovan's place? Would you like to? Would you like to do something else? Maybe Sunday during the day? Maybe right now? Maybe I should stop asking questions.

Come to Rhode Island with me!!

Just the fact that you can use the phrase "the dude who owns Curves" shows me that something is wrong.

I firmly believe that any company that has a women only membership policy should be run/owned by women. (And, their charity money should go to helping women, not controlling their lives/bodies.)

Just my two cents.

Dude, Bob Evans is /totally/ a midwestern thing. I'd never seen or heard of a Bob Evans until I moved to Columbus. We have similar restaurants that are casual and family-friendly and all of that. I think the most similar one to Bob's is probably Friendly's. But it doesn't have the southern-ish food, like biscuits and gravy.

Holidays like that are weird - when half of the country has the day off and the other half has to go to work. It's like all the schools are closed, but tons of people have to work. I guess it's "Big Money for Babysitters" day!

Technically, Veteran's Day is a holiday at my agency... but in my specific program, we took a vote and decided to work Thursday in exchange for getting the day after Thanksgiving off. Much better, IMO.

Check your health insurance to see if they have a fitness reimbursement program. Prove you go enough, and they'll pay you to exercise. I have BC&BS and use the YMCA, and it forces me to go three times a week... So far I've been reimbursed $177 and we pay $61/month for a family of four to use the Y. I think the most I can get back is $250... that reminds me, where's that second check???
