Random Work Thoughts
Dec. 1st, 2004 09:24 pmI received a number of flattering compliments at work today regarding my work performance. My Director made several remarks about me throughout the day, complimenting my work ethic, my personality, and my competence. Those were nice. The Director of the nursery school (where we have our playgroups) also passed along some heartening comments about me made by one of my co-teachers (the really experienced one). It feels good to be appreciated and also to be seen as a competent person, an asset to the team. That's nice, even if this isn't my ideal job. It's certainly an ideal work environment.
The compliments were especially well received because it's pretty common knowledge that I get a lot of the challenging families, because I like the tough families and because I'm a social worker. (Since we employ people from a number of disciplines, including social workers, psychologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech-language pathologists, educators, and art therapists, the heavily environmentally-involved cases tend to go to the social workers.) So it's pretty common that when we're discussing challenging kids in our team meetings, they're almost always mine. It's nice to know that when my teammates make comments like, "Jude, maybe you should stop beating your kids," they're definitely kidding and think I do good work.
It's cool to get the tough families because I'm good at developing rapports with people and I like cracking the tough nuts. At the same time, though, it's SO frustrating to know that my kids /should/ be seeing a speech therapist and an occupational therapist (in addition to me) but there's /no/ /way/ that the parent(s) will allow another "stranger" in the house. I have a kid who will be three years old in April and only uses and handful of poorly-articulated single words. ARGH! Bring in the speech therapist, lady! She won't bite you, I promise!!

In random news, I'm cold so I made a cup of hot cocoa. I sure hope I don't regret that decision (and the caffiene). I'm already feeling a little off, and I have supervision at 8am tomorrow. Ugh. Work 8-5, but THEN I GET TO SEE THE PIXIES WITH NAILS!!
