Calls from Phung
Dec. 8th, 2004 09:02 amI love when our Vietnamese interpreter calls me on the phone. Conversations with her are always so funny, like she doesn't really understand small talk. She kind of dives into the conversation, says her business, and gets off the phone. And she always tells me who's calling, even though a) I have caller ID, and b) how many Vietnamese senior citizens call me on a regular basis?
So a typical conversation with her goes like this: "Hi, Jude. This is Phung. I talk to Billy's mother. She busy. Don't come." And at 8:00 in the morning, when I am just waking up (yeah yeah, I know, some of you are at work by that time), it all sounds so surreal and I try to piece it together. "Hunh? What? Hi. Don't come? Okay."
(Even though I know the /real/ reason why the mom cancelled was because the Vietnamese interpreter is on vacation this week, and I don't think Mom wanted me to come to her house without her.)
