Hair blog, and girly woes.

So I'm having this dilemma that I haven't written about, which is unusual for me since I write about everything.
As you know, I have been on a mission to grow my hair out for a while. There really wasn't any reasoning behind it, partly because I forgot what I look like with hair and partly because I was bored and wanted to do something else. Jen started cutting her hair shorter and I didn't want us to have the same haircut, because that is a level of dorkitude that even I am not comfortable with.
It's been many many months since I started growing my hair, and though I haven't been just growing it straight out (I've gotten in shaped several times), it's getting quite long. Considering where it started, that is. And now I'm kind of at a loss. I feel weird with hair. I've definitely lost the androgynous look I was so fond of, and I'm looking a lot more like a girl, which is evidenced by the fact that lots of people commented about how "pretty" I was in my last posted photo. I think I pretty much look girly all the time.
And now I don't look all boyish in my clothes any more, and I'm not sure how I feel about it. I don't know if I want to go back to being a tomboyish girl or whatever, and I know I'm not ready to start wearing girly clothes all over the place yet. So I'm stuck. Do I get a haircut and kill all the hard work and patience? Do I continue to let the hair grow and see if I have a change of heart? Am I just a neurotic mess?
Aaaah, questions, questions.

Date: 2005-01-11 01:30 am (UTC)I had a similar haircut right before I moved to Columbus in 2000, and I was such a frumpy and unhappy married hausfrau. Maybe that's why I feel so weird.

Date: 2005-01-11 04:38 am (UTC)I can't tell you the last time I wore makeup. I honestly can't remember. Maybe my wedding??! Thankfully it rained that day and it all washed off the second I stepped out of the ghastly limo.
And yeah, I guess you're right. If I have to, I can be some prissy metrosexual boy. (But really, eek!)

Date: 2005-01-11 04:27 am (UTC)Here is a thought, maybe people told you that you were pretty in your last post because you are pretty...but that doesn't necessarily mean that you are "girl" pretty. Bear with me here. When I saw your pic after reading your post, I thought "hey! I know lots of guys with that same exact haircut! It was really popular in the eighties." And do you know what was popular in the eighties? (I'm sure you do because you were there) PRETTY BOYS! (Emilio Estevez in the Breakfast Club for instance) Yay! So please do not let compliments that may initially seem sex oriented sway your coiffe decisions. And, if you're still afraid that longer hair will make you more girly then just tell people that you're aspiring for more of a Judd Nelson Breakfast Club style. Just a thought:) I'm trying to grow my hair out too btw and it's driving me nutty as well but I know that at least now, when I have a bad hair day, I'll be able to strap it up in a ponytail:)

Date: 2005-01-11 04:43 am (UTC)(That's a lot better than my previous example, which is to say I am working on the Mike Myers "I'll never get out of the 80s" So I Married an Axe Murderer 'do!)
You're right - I guess I shouldn't always read gender into everything, even if it's my nature. But it /is/ fascinating how all of a sudden I have three inches of hair and people are telling me I'm pretty. Also, I'm getting hit on by boys/men again in public. Weird.

Date: 2005-01-11 03:59 pm (UTC)My hair is kinda like that too, except without the swoosh in the front.
All I'm doing is getting the back trimmed up.
And you shouldn't get anything more than a trim. It looks good. Not too girly, not too boyish. Just like you.

Date: 2005-01-12 02:11 am (UTC)And thanks for your opinion. I'm really at a loss with this hair business. It is so annoying! :)

Date: 2005-01-11 05:12 pm (UTC)hahaha - that makes NO sense, but that's the best explination i can make!
personally, i just got aggravated with my hair recently, and i definately cut off at least .... a good 6 inches... but MY hair grows insanely fast.. so - it's really your call. it looks nice now, and you could still pull off a slicked back james dean look if you styled your hair. it looks pretty hawt right now... it's always nice for a a change.

Date: 2005-01-12 02:12 am (UTC)I wish I just knew what to do with it. I'm so lame and have had low-maintenance hair for so long that I'm not sure where to go from here. I might have to (*gasp!*) go to a hair stylist.
