judecorp: (work poison)

I left home at 9:00 this morning to get to a home visit at 9:30 that was a mile away. I gave myself plenty of time to clean off the car well and find somewhere to park. I slid and slipped all around my little one-way neighborhood and got onto the main road, where a school bus full of elementary children fishtailed and slid and almost hit me. I'm so glad the schools were in session today. At the light, I turned onto another main road where a car slid through the red light in the other direction and I had to swerve out of the way of him. At this point, I decided to hell with my 9:30, and I drove to work. I arrived to an illuminated voicemail light, and a message from my 9:30 mom telling me she was cancelling our appointment. Half an hour later, I called my 10:45 in Mission Hill and they told me it was a nightmare out there, and to stay at work.

I am one of two people in my office who has not yet billed anything this week, and I am incredibly anxious about it. At this rate I will be working 60-hour weeks for the next 6 months to make up all the time. So I was determined to go to my 1:00 and 2:00. At noon, my 2:00 calls and cancels on me because the children are sick. I head out to my 1:00 at 12:30 and drive around Southie for thirty minutes looking for parking. I eventually park on Broadway, well aware of the "No Parking During Snow Emergency" signs but sit comfortably in the fact that a) there are 20 other cars there and b) it's Southie. I walk 15 minutes in the snow back to the projects to get to my family's apartment.

THEY ARE NOT HOME.

I slush 15 minutes back to my car, drive back to work, and promptly collapse in a heap at my desk. I am so frustrated and anxious and stressed and unhappy and full of HATE.

I have still billed ZERO hours this week.

I know this is easy to say, and not to do, but remember one of the biggest storms in recent history just smacked the crap out of everything on the northeastern seaboard, and things will be out of wack for a while. I know you feel the pressure to perform, but please take it easy on yourself -- 99% of this stuff is out of your control, and any reasonable supervisor will see that.

Well, it's not like my supervisor is yelling at me or anything... I mean, the people who /have/ successfully gone on visits have gone to a couple a day, tops - and most of those were houses that have driveways or hospitals, etc. I don't have any of those places.

It's more /personal/ stress... I want to make quota so I can get my bonus at the end of the fiscal year. But now it seems like it will never happen unless I spend the next couple of months pulling 60hour weeks.

is there no contingency plan for events like this?

In a perfect world they would give us a "free" week of no productivity quota. But that will never happen. Our agency depends on billing to keep afloat financially and this week is hitting them hard in the pocketbook, too.

I'm not much of a crier. I just can't really function. I'm walking a very fine line.

I'm under more pressure about billable hours than you are, and here's the attitude I've been leaning more towards:

I work more than 40 hours a week, I go above and beyond for my clients (including services that aren't billable time), I do favors for coworkers, I step up and help with things I wasn't even asked to, and if that isn't enough for my employer, fuck 'em.
