Grrr!

One thing I hate to bitch about is money, mostly because I hate money and hate materialism (though I love toys, which I can't reconcile except to say that I wish they were free!). But... grr. Just grrr.

I got 'home' at 5:30am or so after dropping Christina off at the airport. (We stayed at Bink's because it's closer to the airport and so she could get some sleep.) When I walked into my bedroom, my old computer monitor was on the floor. I went out into the living room, and sure enough, A. had a brand new monitor attached to his computer.

For a brief amount of time, I held on to the hope that he got it at work or something, like they replaced some computers and he took a monitor. But when I was drying my hair (the hair dryer is in his bedroom), I saw the monitor box from Best Buy.

Now, he KNOWS that I'm not getting paid until 31 October (because my contract hasn't been submitted in time), and he KNOWS that he just got a root canal last week that cost a few hundred dollars.

So what the fuck?

Okay, I'm gonna say that I /totally/ understand you here. The husband announced last week that he was buying a thousand-dollar-speaker-and-receiver system for the front room. This just /after/ telling me that we couldn't afford the 300 dollar 19-inch monitor that /I/ wanted to get.

Why is it okay to spend money on their toys, but not ours?

Of course, if that wasn't what you meant by your post, well, then I'm off base but I still feel better. I hope you do too!

Well, it's not quite the same, but I will lament with you quand meme.

When I said 'toys,' I'm thinking about my PEZ Dispensers and smurf figurines, not, like, electrical equipment. I'm just freaking about where I will get the money to pay for this monitor and the root canal, when I'm not receiving any income at all this month.

Of course, I suppose in some sense of things, that's not his problem. He DID get paid this month, so maybe I should just suck it up. We're not a family, and we shouldn't have family finances.

It seems to me, Jude-babe, that you oughta tell him to take it back. And that he can't make any more big purchases until the divorce is final. I hate to be so callous, but since he isn't willing to try to make the marriage work, he doesn't have the right to incur debts in both your names.


And Wolfie, it seems to me like the same goes for you but for a different reason. Marriages ought to be a partnership, not a dictatorship. Tell him no. We can't afford it. You don't need it.

Oh hey, if he wants to spend the money on the speakers and receiver, dude, that's fine with me so long as I get to spend what I want on a monitor and the other stuff I want for my birthday. =) If we can't afford both, then dude. It's my birthday. I'm gonna be a selfish bitch. =)

Of course, I could never sit there and tell someone to take something back. He's a big boy and makes his own decisions and I don't want to impact that. That may sound wishy washy, but I don't want him telling me not to have hot girls visiting me, and therefore I won't tell him he /can't/ buy something.

It just irks me that I'm the only one worrying about the finances. He had a good reason to buy a new monitor, but the timing is bad. And I can't stop being annoyed that he doesn't bother to think of the timing and the bigger picture, just his immediate needs.

Which, I suppose, is a reflection of the relationship as a whole. Maybe.
