I think it's so sad that you can spot autism in a child that is only 1 1/2.

(Well, I think it's great that you can get an early diagnosis and start services early, but you know what I mean.)

We have a friend that J met in med school... her daughter was diagnosed at age 2... her son was diagnosed as an infant. Her marriage has since fallen apart. She bought husband and kids a house in Maine and the kids attend special autistic schools. She lives in Rhode Island but supports both households so that husband can spend full-time with the kids.

My baby brother is autistic. While I don't remember if we had a formal diagnosis at that point, you could definitely tell something was up when he was that age.

Hey beautiful,
Yesterday I was in Baton Rouge having dinner with some people, and happened to mention Philmont in the conversation. After dinner a young woman came up to me, saying that I looked familar and asking if I had worked at Philmont. I told summer 97,98, and she had worked both summers also, the first at PTC, and then next at head of dean. Her name was Adrienne Vargas, or Var?????. I thought maybe she had worked on the kitchen staff. I did not have much time to talk to her, but I was just wondering if the name sounded familar to you at all. Also, do you still have your list of philmont names and addresses? Just wondering. It just seemed so unlikely to bump into a Philmont alum in an Indian restarant in Louisiana.

Debbie, of Kevin and Debbie would have had a lot to say about this topic of autism, as she teaches a autistic child sign language to communicate. Anyway, talk to you later. mike

The name sounds familiar, and I think she DID work food service at PTC in 1997. I think she was a brunette, and was maybe just out of high school? I could have her mistaken with someone else, though.

Oh yeah, there are definitely signs, especially when kids are closer to the actual "autism" end of the spectrum. But it's so rare that I see a kid that young with an actual diagnosis already, and it's still a little sad.

I'm floored by the amount of autism spectrum disorders my agency sees just in its little corner of Boston.

Wow, that's tough. I know several families with kids with PDD (Pervasive Developmental Delay, on the autism spectrum) and they are always /so afraid/ of having a second child on the spectrum. Gah.

I just heard something about this on NPR yesterday. Maybe you did too.. They were talking about encoraging early results on trying to come up with a blood test that will find it.

I actually missed that. I can't say I listen to a lot of NPR (and don't have much time for radio listening, really), but I wish I'd have caught that. It sounds interesting. I don't know how feasible it is, really... but still.
