Funeral Recap
Jun. 6th, 2005 08:43 pmWell, we made it back this evening and are trying to get things back to "normal," whatever that means. Dinner is cooking and laundry is running, the cats are wandering around and we're at our respective computers. Life marches on, although I'm not even remotely looking forward to going back to work tomorrow, except to see coworkers. At least I have a really mellow day tomorrow - I'm pretty sure all I have is my playgroup (all of my Tuesday PM clients turned 3) so I can spend some time making phone calls and trying to remember how to work.
So many people came to pay respects to my father and our family. I'm really kind of blown away by it all, there were easily 200 people there and probably closer to 250 or so. It was so nice to see that he and our family mean so much to so many people. My dad's cousins Margie and Roberta drove up from New Jersey yesterday and got into a car accident on the way to the wake. Thankfully they were not injured and their car is okay. So many of my dad's big burly biker friends were really choked up and teary. It was just so heartening to see how loved he was by everyone.
Everything went off without a hitch. People seemed to like what we'd picked out for everything, and there were so many flowers. Gosh, I'm still so overwhelmed by everything, all the support. The funeral went well - my SIL Gretchen and my cousin Tony brought up the gifts, and my stepsister Erin and my best smoochie did readings. Everyone was wonderful. The sun came out after the funeral so things were warm and cheery (as can be, I suppose) for the burial. We had a meal courtesy of my grandparents and then just chilled for a little while.
I got to see so many relatives and family friends that I haven't seen in forever. My godmother, Rosanna, came and I don't think I've seen her since my First Communion, seriously. She came to the funeral in cargo pants and a fleece and my god, could I have had a more perfect godmother? Really. She spent a lot of time hugging my Jennifer and welcoming her to the family, which was just wonderful. I'm so fortunate to have such tolerant family members, but it's just that much nicer when someone's excited for me. (Besides, I got kind of tired of most of the older people calling Jen "John" and thinking she was my husband. Hello, boobs.) Tons of our Portuguese relatives came, too, which was nice. (We joked that you could get half the room to turn around by yelling "Manny" or "Joe.")
On the way down to RI, we noticed that our car was jerky around third gear so it looks like a call to the dealer is in order. Hopefully it's a warranty problem (which it should be, it seems pretty transmission) that won't be too much of a PITA. Also I hope using it this week for work doesn't turn out to be a big mistake.
All in all, as positive an experience as can be, I think.
p.s. Thanks so much to
rizzo41 for the beautiful flowers, and thanks to
whirledpeas and
1stgradehaircut for being a wonderful distraction this weekend. Love you all.
