  • My dream job just opened up at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. Does anyone have any connections there?

  • No, really, it's seriously my dream job. It's for the Director of their LGBT student support program.

  • Today was a crazy day - 2 home visits, a quick stint at the office to do some office work, 2 more home visits, staff meeting, a little more paperwork, a stop to pick up cat food, another home visit, a stop at the library to pick up reserve books, a quick trip home, and a stop at Home Depot for hardware to fix my freaking closet (finally).

  • Tomorrow will be just as busy - 3-hour playgroup, an assessment, a home visit, a quick trip home to give [livejournal.com profile] siercia the key, a 7pm haircut, home to do laundry for trip.

  • Yeah, Friday's crazy too. But then we will be on VaCaTiOn!

  • Someone almost totally plowed into the driver's side of my car today. I was going through an intersection and so was he. Except he had a stop sign. And, well, didn't. Lots of brake-slamming and swerving into the open intersection to avoid a collision ensued.

  • I did all the work. He just stopped in the middle of the intersection looking totally pissed off, as if I'd nearly hit him.

  • Yeah, I think that will do me tonight.

My friend Kai's girlfriend just got her doctorate through Umass Amherst and now works as a professor at UMass Boston. I don't know whether she has "connections" or not, for what you need... :/

A nice thought, but unless she can somehow help my getting hired, I'm guessing not.

But thanks!

I think so, once I got the hang of it. It's really quite over my head. Don't tell anyone. :)

One of my dear ex-coworker friends knows 2/3 of everyone at UMass 'cos she's been there for 25 years or so. I emailed her to ask who/what she knows about that position.

I know it's exciting, but hold off on the cover letter until you're back from vacation (unless you're leaving for 2 weeks); give us some time to fish for the real info on what they're looking for, as opposed to what the job description says. If it's anything at all like the search committees I've been on, they honestly will not look at that stuff until the 15th, at which point the dept secretary will make copies of everything and send 'em out to the cmte, who may or may not actually have a meeting scheduled to do a first-pass weedout before scheduling interviews. Given the student-support nature of the position, my guess is the participants will be up to their eyeballs getting ready for school to start (or taking their last chance at vacation), and you won't even get called for an interview until mid-late september. Remember, except under extraordinary circumstances, hiring professional staff at UMass probably averages 4 months from app deadline to job offer.

If you didn't see the email from my friend I forwarded a little while ago, a huge component is going to be to bring in budget and staff efficiency ideas.

Okay, I'll wait if you think that's best. Thanks! I just don't want to miss out on a good opportunity. Even if the job itself bites, it at least would stick me in the right direction with my career. :)

[livejournal.com profile] jadefu and I will not let you miss out on this opportunity. We promise. We need a couple days to get the connections connected, though. There's no reason not to use every bit of info we can gather to help tailor your résumé and cover letter.

You enjoy your vacation next week. Wave to my mom as you fly over Jacksonville. Do you want us to send stuff as it trickles in, or save it all for one big message when you come back so it doesn't get lost in the clutter of a week's worth of emails?

I don't get a lot of e-mail at the address you sent it to, so you can do either and it will be fine. Also, my in-laws have internet at their house so we'll likely be checking in.

Either/or. It's fine with me. :)

Melis is on vacation next week, too. What are you & Jen doing? Anything good?

We're going to Florida for the week. We'll be staying with Jen's parents, who bought a house down there last year that we've never been to. They're also paying for us to spend two days in Key West during the trip, which is TEH AWESOME.

Sometimes I find jobs through idealist.org (they list lots of non-profit, activisty jobs). Sometimes I hear from other people. Sometimes I look at specific websites, like Fenway's or whatever. Every week I check the HR websites of all of the colleges in Western Mass, so I went to the UMass page and was surprised to find this one.

*crosses fingers that I even have a chance*

I just saw that job yesterday and thought of you....

Let me look again and see what department that's in. We actually have been working on a project with a Umass VP, and I wonder if that's under her. I also have connections through the Five College Consortium (where I worked for a little bit--and we're working on a project with them).

And J needs to talk to his buddies that still work there.

Wow, if either of you guys could seriously help a brother out, I would be totally indebted to you. Especially since I'm sure many other applicants will have WAY more relevent experience than I do.

Note to self, must print out resume and cover letter tonight.

xoxo, you are the best!

i only know people studying at UMass, but I could work on getting a connection to the queer student coordinator (i.e. head of the queer orgs?), which may suit you well if you apply, since you'd already be known and liked by the people who you'd be working with.

Dude, if you could, that would be seriously awesome. If it ever came down to it (like, if I ever had a chance) would I be able to use you as a reference of a young person I used to work with? Would you lie and say I was the awesomest ever? :)

i would SO vouch for you, because in reality, you are THE awesome. i'd also bring up angie wellman and of course, patty too.

i'll see what i can do connection wise. if you ever need me for anything (i.e. go up to UMass, etc) drop me one.
