The curse of the house
Aug. 14th, 2005 09:04 pmWe went down to RI again and I have to say, going twice in one weekend is just nuts. The whole experience continues to fill me with dread because it's all so overwhelming. To think that we've been going there at least once a week since the beginning of June and it still looks like nothing is done. Well, that's not entirely true - it looks like we've made more of a mess in a lot of places.
But the fridge is empty, the kitchen cabinets are empty, and most of the pictures are off the walls. The bathroom is mostly empty, the dressers are empty and the clothing has all been donated. So has some of the linen. The loose change was Coinstar'd a long time ago. There has been no pirate treasure, though I did find a lot of photos.
Our recent tactic has been to try to put the same kinds of things in the same rooms, so that in the event that we ever get set up enough to have an auction person or something come over, we can just show parts of the house. Toys in one room, military stuff in another room, random possibly antique stuff in a third room, useless knick knacks somewhere else. It's... coming. Most of the non-military stuff has been taken out of the military room, and most of the non-toy stuff has been taken out of the toy room. There's a pile for comic books, a pile for the coin collection, a pile for jewelry, a box for books, a stack of art, a pile of photos. We've gone through most of the furniture and bagged (to throw out) almost everything that can't be considered even remotely a collectible, even if it might be useful (like nails and screws and ashtrays and whatever else). We probably have ten bags of garbage in the dining room. When it gets cooler we can rent a dumpster and dump it all, and throw out pretty much everything in the attic and basement.
I guess it's coming along, but it still just looks like a great big disaster area with no start and no finish. Just thinking about it makes me want to go to bed and never wake up. It doesn't help that our car decided to do the "locked steering column" thing again today, too. In the 90-degree heat. Nice.
So, yeah. Jen took pictures of things to help with the efforts and we'll see where that goes. The whole thing just makes me want to throw up. I feel like I work 100 hours a week now, between my job, volunteering, babysitting, and the house. Not to mention the huge amounts of money we're continuing to dump into our gas tank.
*grump*
