Today I talked to my Supervisor and my Director about helping the relief effort in New Orleans with the Red Cross. They both said they would support my decision, so I e-mailed the Red Cross to see if they still need mental health/clinical volunteers.

We'll see what happens! I'm so psyched they were so okay with me bailing on work. I guess it's the kind of situation where they can't say no or they'd look like turds.

I actually talked that over with Halleyscomet this morning and just filled out the online form to volunteer to be sent to the effected areas. We'll see what happens. In some ways, I hope they take me up on the offer, in other ways, I hope they don't. But at least we are all taking the courage and making the offer to help. Unlike certain lilly-livered presidents...

I e-mailed the Boston Red Cross today and hope I hear from them, but I definitely know what you mean. Part of me is nervous about hearing back from anyone.

But I couldn't /not/ do it, you know? That would be far too easy.

p.s. I'm proud of you.

Wiley heard back from them this morning - he's signed up for training next Saturday. The guy he spoke to said if he got sent down there, it could be anywhere from a week to six months before he went.

I totally can't go next Saturday, though. I have a work thing. Augh.

I thought about doing the same, but given I've only been there 3 months and have a lot to catch up on so I don't fuck up too many times and get fired...

If anyone tried to fire you for wanting to help out in the relief effort, I'd say that it isn't the best social service agency for you to be in.

Just sayin'.

I've only been at this job 4.5 months, but this is bigger than just my job. I'm not saying it has to be for you, but I figured my bosses were decent understanding guys, and they are.

Jude, call me. I have the DIRECT NUMBER of the person you need to talk to. Training is next Thursday, or next Saturday. I'm doing next Saturday, in Brockton.

Will do. I called to register for the one-day training and they're holding two trainings on September 10th - next Saturday. Sadly, September 10th is the ONE day all month I have a commitment. I have a work event that I would totally skip if I hadn't made Jen rearrange her whole work schedule to come with me. Ugh. I feel like such a heel. I need to talk to her about what to do about that.

Hopefully they will open more trainings so I can go to one. I'm kind of bummed that I might miss out on this opportunity to help. But still - whenever they have another training I am definitely going, if only to be ready for the next time.

sounds like a plan :) Maybe I'll go, too. I feel awful not being able to do something more concrete than donating money...

It would be an awesome experience. I'm sure Social Work school would be tolerant of such an endeavor.
