Florida Job
Sep. 23rd, 2005 09:02 amMy Jennifer came home from work yesterday and mentioned that one of the people that works in the main headquarters of her company (Levenger) is leaving. She is a Product Manager and is the person who (I think) is specifically responsible for buying all of the pens for Levenger stock. Apparently this woman talked to Jen on the phone and said that my smoochie should have her job, and somewhere in there was some sort of conference call where her name was tossed around all over the place.
This is such a fantastic opportunity for her and it is wonderful that she was the first person that popped into the heads of all the bigwigs. She has been mulling over the idea of getting out of retail superficially but remaining behind-the-scenes in this capacity. It is definitely a huge step up from being a retail slave (even though she's an assistant manager, which is like a glorified slave), and I am incredibly proud of her for showing her talents and making such a great impression. If she wants this sort of career, I definitely think she needs to pursue this. I know she is thinking about it.
The hitch is that Levenger HQ is in Delray Beach, Florida. Florida. Far from my entire family and home of Jeb Bush. That could certainly be a tremendous con.

Date: 2005-09-24 12:12 pm (UTC)I'm not sure how I would feel about being a resident of a state that will strip those rights from us. Gosh, I get sick to my stomach just thinking about it. Jennifer's company doesn't offer DP benefits, only married spouse benefits. Moving to FL with her in that company would mean that I would be uninsured if I was unable to find work - nevermind when I might leave work to have/raise our children. Scary thought.
Does Florida still forbid queer adoption? I don't remember.

no married benefits
we're registered domestic partners in west palm beach - but it would be nicer if it were county wide but alas.
well if you DO come, at least you'll have a friendly couple of faces :)

Date: 2005-09-26 01:55 am (UTC)I just don't know how feasible it is to do this if Jennifer's job won't give DP benefits. It would break my heart to lose our marriage rights but it would be do-able. But being in a situation where I (and any child I might have) would not be covered under her insurance, and thus would negate my being able to stay home with our babies, is pretty much unacceptable (and unfair as hell!) to me.
When she inquires about the job, she's going to inquire about keeping the same benefits she currently enjoys in Massachusetts. Otherwise the situation is just too risky for us.
(There is a similar problem if we were to ever move back to Ohio, too. It's all so sad.)

Date: 2005-09-23 05:51 pm (UTC)Of course then there's the Oregon/Washington situation of one not having a State Income Tax (Oregon, I think) and the other not having sales tax (Washington). So you live in Portland and shop in Vancouver.
Or it could be reversed... been a while since I looked into it.
