First impressions of New Orleans:

It's not really my kind of place. I can't help but be a little afraid of all things Southern, to start. (Must be all of that New England brainwashing.) Most of the tourists that are here with us sound deep south and the younger guys dress like southern guys do (business casual or "clean cut frat boy"). I can totally see where New Orleans would be an awesome time if you are a pub crawler or party boy/girl... which neither of us are.

We are, however, eaters - so that works out just fine. We hit up Gumbo Shop for a late lunch and I had a delicious bowl of red beans and rice with sausage. Jen got a praline sundae for dessert and I had a taste of it - I'm not really a nuts person (HAR HAR) so I wasn't too tempted. After another walk we sat at Cafe du Monde for a while because this hot asian chick was playing a mean electric violin. She was just awesome. So we had some cold beverages (mmm, iced decaf cafe au lait) and Jen ordered a plate of beignets. I was incredibly disciplined and only ate one, though I will surely have another before we leave.

We rode the streetcar, the only one that's really running - it goes partway up Canal Street and down the Riverfront. They're running the green cars instead of the reds... I guess only the green ones are workable. Riding the streetcar was fun and laid back (just how I like it) and gave us a better perspective of where we were staying, which seems a little less sketch now. Which is nice. (We're one block off of the non-Quarter side of Canal Street.)

The hotel is okay, though poorly maintained. The shower has good water pressure and hot water, which is good, but the "shower massage" type head is all effed up and water only comes out some of the holes. I hate that. The bed is pretty typical (hard) which is okay for me but terrible for My Jennifer. I know she won't be sleeping well this weekend. :(

I think we both conked out last night sometime between 9 and 10pm. We were watching a movie that I was really enjoying and I just couldn't watch anymore. Because of the early night, I was wide awake around 5:15am - temped and POASed and tried to go back to sleep. I gave up around 6ish and have been reading and puttering ever since. Jen seems to be actually getting some sleep right now so I'm going to leave her be.

Some dude banged on our door at 2am and scared the crap out of us. He had the wrong room. Argh! After that I woke up at 3 and 4... so I'm sure I'll be wiped again today. Aah well. At some point soon I should check out the cafe downstairs in search of breakfast food (or at least some milk) so I can take meds.

I think we're going to do one of those cheesy ghost tours tonight. At some point this weekend I'd also like to take a mulecart ride. Jen found this little guide with what's going on at the bars all weekend, and one bar is having a piano sing-a-long tomorrow night that I want to convince her to go to. We're supposed to get together with [livejournal.com profile] goddamnelf and [livejournal.com profile] ladyoracle but I haven't been able to get in touch with them. So we'll probably do a modified Bourbon Street thing tomorrow night regardless - stop at Pat O'Brien's and I'll make Jen order a hurricane so I can have some sips.

We might do a little casino action (for Jen) some time and I'd like to find a way to check out the zoo or the Garden District, which will involve navigating buses (no streetcar) which I'm not sure about. We want to hit the Palace Cafe for some white chocolate bread pudding and I definitely want to take some more pictures. We thought about taking a Gay Heritage tour but I think it will be a lot of cheesy gossip, so naaah. I'm really bummed that the Aquarium isn't open yet because it's one of the things we really wanted to see.

We stopped into a couple of galleries yesterday and we definitely want to do more of that, too. I just wish we had more of the "party spirit" - Jen's not a partier and I'm too busy trying to get ready to get knocked up. What a great pair!

cheesy historical tours are the best! As soon as I finish school I'm going to train to be a volunteer docent for the historical walks in San Francisco. Hope you are enjoying your relaxation. Isn't sausage red meat??

I love cheesy historical tours. I kind of want to go on the vampire tour now! ;)

And yeah, I'm sure there's at least some pork in the andouille. I haven't been eating much and hey, it's vacation!

also .. (yes yes, words from the houston native.. i spent a lot of time in new orleans growing up!) there are some nice, relaxing boat tours of the river if you're interested in that sort of thing!

That could be nice. I haven't looked to see what kind of boat tours there are... I know there are swamp tours and Katrina tours, but I'd really rather just be on a boat having a good time. Is there a tour for that?

too lazy to login.. this is jenn
I don't know about now but there used to be a boat that went down the river (they have a bar on it too!) and talked about the industry that used the river, the ships that are on it at the time, etc.. and dropped you off at the aquarium.. and there were a few casino boats also.

The Aquarium is still closed due to the hurricane and I think they aren't running the boat that would go from the Zoo to the Aquarium (I haven't seen it, at any rate.) I'll have to check into other boat options.
