I've been trying to be more responsible about our food choices as of late, and have been pretty good about keeping most of our grocery choices to the outer perimeter of the store. But buying organic and/or more responsible food choices is SO expensive!

(I know that this is the point in the conversation where my [livejournal.com profile] smurfbrother chimes in about how we didn't eat any organic, etc. foods and we turned out just fine. Which is true. Except for my hideous sugar addiction. *wink*) It makes me feel better to buy this stuff because I really don't want to fill my family full of growth hormones, additives, pesticides, and other junk. And I really think it tastes better.

The other downside to buying all of this pricey food is that I feel even more guilty when something goes bad. I know it happens - things go bad sometimes - but it drives me bonkers. I hate to waste food, but I hate having nothing in the house but canned/frozen stuff.

Really, we need to be better about eating out. We've been saying this for several years but we really need to make good on it. We ate out almost every night last week, thanks to our houseguest and then some other stuff, and I honestly think we only ate food in the house on Tuesday and Thursday. That's unacceptable when we have a house full of good food!

We're supposed to go out tonight (I know, I know) with Gina and Ben after we go see Stick It!... and then I'm calling a little moratorium on the eating out. For realz.

Ditto to everything.

Wanna go out to eat with me tonight?

(Just kidding. I also need to get way better about eating at home ... and eating healthy.)

i think the eating out thing is a habit, and once you start eating at home consistently, it's really not that hard to NOT go out all the time. we ate out probably twice a week all last year, and then when we moved to richmond cut it down to maybe once a week, or every other week. we lost 30 lbs combined (also due to the fact that living in the city lends itself to much more walking)and going out to eat now is fun because it's a treat. i hate hate hate throwing any food out too, so i wind up going to the market a couple times a week for veggies and stuff like that. do you two like to cook?

If I find the secret to success, I will seriously let you know.

Jen says she likes to cook, but she usually comes home from work tired and then doesn't want to cook. I don't like to cook. At all. Which is a real drag.

I hope I get to be as good as you at not going out!

I am the same way, of course. We're trying to be healthy, but always seem to have a backup stash of ice cream and frozen pizza just in case... and potato chips... gah, I'm addicted! Potatoes are my #1 comfort food. And chocolate.

We also eat out a lot, though it's gotten better since we moved away from all of our favorite places... and, more importantly, out of range of any food delivery outpost. There is, however, the Southern Kitchen which is about a block south, and a cute little ice cream stand about four houses north. Still, it's better than it was. :)

Some thoughts on hippie food....

It's more important than ever to eat as much natural and additive-free food as possible, because when we were little, there just weren't as many additives in "regular" food. Little girls are hitting puberty earlier every year, and while some of it can be attributed to overweight, a lot of nutritionists think that all the hormones added to animal products are part of the problem.

I get cheapo organic food at Trader Joe's, and pretty much stick to frozen veggies because we were having the same problem with things going bad before we could eat them. TJs has wild-caught fish, and organic free-range meats, as well as organic milk, bread products and veggies. Certainly a cheaper option than Stop and Shop or Whole Foods.

We've all heard "my momma beat me black and blue when I misbehaved, and I turned out just fine." Doesn't make it a good idea.

"I hate to waste food, but I hate having nothing in the house but canned/frozen stuff."

I have the same problem even worse, being single.

I'm not at all opposed to organic/whatever.

I do, however, have this irrational attachment to juice, and it just so happens, jude, that G and I have this same discussion, so it was funny when it came up with you.

I love kool-aid. I don't have a sweet tooth AT ALL, but I love kool-aid. Hell, I have a complete addiction to all artificical froot flavors.

I want my kids to love kool-aid. It's cheap! It tastes good!

I also want my kids to play outside and be active. And I'm not talking about giving a toddler lots of kool-aid.

But dammit, I want my kids to know the sublime joy that is kool-aid.

What I really tend to overeat (and thus don't buy) is ice cream. I swear I could eat ice cream every day!

We really need to stop eating out so much. Not only are we spending a ton of money, we're eating crap food! Must get back into cooking. Maybe we should move away from all restaurants, too!

Yeah, I try to hit Trader Joe's at least once a month and stock up on their frozen meats/fish and other more natural products. But I don't always find that it's cheaper than Shaw's. (Whole Foods definitely, I never go there.) Shaw's doesn't have a LOT of organic/natural options but they definitely have some.

I don't buy organic milk but I do make sure to buy milk that doesn't have hormones in it. And I've started buying organic eggs for Jen (I don't eat eggs). Small steps.

Well, I don't think my brother has ever advocated beating kids. (I could be wrong, of course.)

And yeah, I pretty much eat like a single person, though, because Jen works nights a lot of the time so we're both usually on our own for food. Sometimes I will make a big meal and then wrap it up so she can have it when she gets home, but she doesn't like to eat a big meal when she gets home super late, either.

It's a struggle.

Dude, Kool-Aid is not juice! =P

I agree that a little kool-aid can be delicious, but I don't know how you can say you don't have a sweet tooth. I distinctly remember you adding sugar to pre-sweetened kool-aid! You also love all of those kool-aid type popsicles, which I agree should be part of childhood. In moderation.

The problem is that it's SO sugary. Heck, regular (100%) juice is way too sugary, so kool-aid? Yikes!

Just don't go putting kool-aid in baby bottles and I won't say anything. ;)

I never put sugar in pre-sweetened kool-aid.

I eat sweets very, very rarely - we don't even keep them in the house.

I love popsicles, but if I have 5 over the course of a whole summer, that's noteworthy.

And I won't put kool-aid in my kids' baby bottles - but I'll put it in YOURS!

The babies can use baby bottles, but *I* don't!

Besides, who needs bottles when you have boobies?
