Cursed car

In true "Yes, This Is Really Our Life" fashion, we were rear-ended at an intersection this evening. We decided to head up to the Whole Foods at Symphony (mistake #1) after a quick trip to Target, and while we were waiting for the light to change at the crossroads of Mass Ave and Huntington, some dude decided he wanted to go around and pass us on the right... only he wasn't paying attention and didn't give himself enough room and rubbed the whole passenger side of the rear bumper with the front/side of his car. Guh. Scraped off plastic and paint.

Even better, Jen knows this guy as a teller at the bank where she does deposits for work. And he apparently got his car a week ago. And was really whining about not wanting to go through insurance, and wanting to pay out of pocket, etc. I /hate/ being in those situations. Because you know what? Insurance here SUCKS and having to pay claims and raise your rates even further sucks more.

We didn't have cell phones on us (mistake #2) so instead of calling the police and the insurance company, we took down the dude's info and told him we would get an estimate. After we give him the estimate, if he does not make /immediate/ payment I am going to go all insurance on his ass. I hate to be a non-trusting person, but ugh. We had NO fault in this and the last thing I want is to get screwed.

Jen says the car is cursed. I don't buy that. I think that WE are cursed.

Well, it's only cosmetic damage but it sure is annoying. I want it to be fixed and I want Dude to pay. Our car is crappy enough as it is without having TONS of damage all over it. (It already has a number of dings and dents, and then there's the damage from that vodka bottle - still waiting on payment for that so we can get it fixed - and then there's the time I sideswiped a pole)

I hate cars.

WTF?!?!

I have to say, you are due for a little good luck/blessings/karma sometime soon. It can't just go on and on being ick. :S

Beyond anything, though, I'm glad you and Jen weren't hurt. The annoyance and the finances and whatnot is infuriating, but in some ways a reassurance that you're still here to take care of those things.

You know, I used to think I was a good person but now I just think I must be REALLY effing up the universe because it is clearly out to get me. I wish I could pinpoint where I went wrong because I would totally take it back!

But yes, I am very glad and very thankful that no one was hurt and it was just some cosmetic damage... so even if our kind hearts end up getting screwed over, we still have a working car.

Sorry to hear that.... I didn't call my insurance company once. They the other person called their company. It made things a lot more difficult. I decided that from that point on, I always would call my insurance company. It's not personal, they don't hit you on purpose, you don't want to have to pay collection agent.

But i can be a witch.

Yeah, I was kind of in a bind because the guy was really leaning on Jen and well, she kind of knows him. He's definitely not a friend or even an acquaintance, so I REALLY wanted to just make with the insurance and the proper channels... but when a car full of antsy Ethiopian dudes is all over your car and inspecting the damage and talking to each other and whatever... ugh, it's kind of nervewracking.

I have this terrible feeling that this was some sort of test from the Universe to stop being such a trusting nice guy... AND I TOTALLY FAILED.

If that dude calls his insurance company I swear I will hunt him down.

I used to be trusting....

2 years ago I was helping my best friend with her wedding. She lived in Philly and I had to pay to park when I went to visit her. I went to pay and the guy TOTALLY ripped me off. I circled back to my friends house to try and figure out what was wrong. She came over with me. Her soon to be husband was in the bathroom, he came over when he was done. The parking dude wouldn't talk to me at all. Barely talked to her. She kept getting madder and madder and yelling louder and louder. People were coming out of restaurants to see what all the noise was about. I think the funniest thing is when she yelled SUCK MY DICK.

Her now husband did get my money back and we called the manager on monday and got the guy fired. But it has tough. I wanted to be nice. I didn't want to make waves. But.......

Let's hope this works out for you.

Okay, I would have liked to see that!

I am good at being the Bad Cop when we go to the mechanic's to get the car fixed. Jen is always too nice to the mechanics and we pay too much money. I make a lot of noise and get discounts. For some reason, I can be mean there. But I am a softy for the insurance thing because our insurance is so ridiculous. Now if I had hit someone, I would want to go through insurance just to be honest... but I could see how it could be tempting to get around a big rate increase if I could.

I wonder, too, if he doesn't really have insurance. Sometimes I /am/ far too nice. I was going to say trusting, and then I realized that I don't really trust him at all and am expecting to be screwed, but for whatever reason I didn't want to make waves. I need help.

You are not cursed. I do agree that you are due for something extra-nice, though.

I also totally get not wanting to make waves, being too nice, etc. Just be careful.

Did you get his plate number?

I have his license plate number and his name and address from his car registration and his insurance company name which is written on his car registration. He gave me a cell phone number. And I do know where he works.

That's good...I thought so, but I once was in the same situation and got minorly screwed, and don't want the same to happen to you.

Good luck. I hope this is resolved painlessly. I am glad you were both okay!
