Laurie and Lisa's wedding
Aug. 6th, 2006 10:30 pmThis afternoon/evening, after a trip to the grandparents', Jen and I attended Laurie and Lisa's wedding. Laurie is a friend of mine from junior high and high school, although we don't keep in touch very well. I mean, she lives in RI and I go to RI almost every weekend, yet we NEVER see each other! Oh well, at least we got a wedding invite! (I don't really know Lisa at all, due to the whole "not seeing each other" thing.) It was a nice wedding, and the ceremony was simple yet beautiful, and the whole thing almost made me wish that Jen and I had had a ceremony of our own, especially because My Jennifer really wanted one. Aah well.
I especially liked this part where instead of having one of those Unity Candle things, the brides each had a bottle of sand from their respective homelands (a beach in RI for one and San Padre Island - I think - for the other) and then they poured the two sands into one container. That was neat. And it was weird to have an almost womyn-only wedding!
Here are some of my favorite photos (of myself, not the wedding, because I'm lame like that):
Whoop, there it is!

Major talent

I unofficially call this one "Laurie looks like a fashion model and I look like a teenager."

I look kind of psychotic in this one, but dude - I'm rockin' a tea-length strapless number (and a sombrero)!

All in all, we had a good time even though we only knew a handful of people. They played this game that was like a combination of musical chairs and a scavenger hunt - one person from each table. Jen was our table's representative and she totally won it all with the help of Kayla's amazing purse! I was so proud.
Also, Jen agreed to dance with me (slow AND fast) which I know makes her hecka uncomfortable, so <3 <3 <3 <3.

Date: 2006-08-07 02:56 am (UTC)And well, the dress had straps (they can button on/off) but when we were dancing, the stupid straps kept falling off my shoulders. So I took them off and then my dress kept falling down! (Note to self: get more boobs or something).
Heh.

Date: 2006-08-07 03:09 am (UTC)When I got married the first time, I had a big wedding. Like almost 200 people big. And it was a very bad experience for me (even before we broke up)... but the most humbling thing was pledging forever in front of all of my nearest and dearest and then, like, having to take it back. And while I don't intend for this marriage to end, I didn't last time, either. So I was a little soured on the whole "big wedding" thing.
And then we moved here and were actually able to GET married, and we were broke. Broker than broke. We went over all of our options (locations, etc.), including having something in the back yard if the landlords would let us, and we couldn't swing it. So we put off getting married. (We moved 06-01-04.)
After nearly a year had passed without us being able to swing any kind of wedding, we decided we would go get married in city hall just to get it done, and follow it up with some sort of party afterward. We got married on 05-13-05. Sort of a "send out notices that we got married and just have a reception" deal, which was kind of a bummer for Jen because she wanted the whole shebang.
Two weeks after we went to City Hall, my dad died totally unexpectedly. And not only was I not in any sort of festive, big family day kind of mood, but our lives were totally consumed with Dead Dad Stuff. At that time we said what we would do would be to have a big-ass blowout for our first anniversary - a party and renewing vows and all of that.
When our first anniversary was coming around, we actually contacted a couple of venues about pricing/packages/etc. re: having a do-over. And it was SO much money, and while we actually had enough to swing it (thanks to aforementioned Dead Dad), we had earmarked a bunch of money to trying to make a baby. (At the time, we were told insurance wasn't going to cover a thing.) So we couldn't swing the babymaking AND the wedding. And we thought about having a house party (again) and then ran into weirdness about Jen's family flying in and needing a place to stay so that they could come eat potluck at our house.
So then we went back to the venue idea, and we found one we liked and it was pricey but hey, we're worth it. But it was not near any hotels, and it was not on public transportation, and then the details got nuts - so if Jen's fam stays in hotels, how do they get there? Do we have to arrange cabs/rental cars for them? Will they get lost? Etc. So frustrating. Boston is not a fun place to have a wedding.
At this point, it seems like we've missed the boat and anything we had would seem cheesy. I mean, we've lived together for years now, exchanged rings in 2003, moved in 2004, got married in 2005, and hope to get pregnant in 2006. What else is there to celebrate?
On the way home from the wedding, I was thinking that our next big thing will be house-buying, which will hopefully occur after successful babymaking. We could throw a big party for that and it wouldn't be like "hey, we're having a party from 2 years ago." I can imagine it now: "We fell in love on a weekend out of town. We were married in secret at Boston City Hall on a Friday afternoon. We made a baby in a lonely doctor's office. But you can come party in public with us in OUR NEW HOUSE!"
Does any of that make any sense at all?

Date: 2006-08-07 06:03 pm (UTC)Also, I never had a wedding either. We just didn't want to be overwhelmed with details and other people's opinions and somehow lose sight of what the day was about. We got married by ourselves on top of a mountain. :) It ended up being a wonderful experience, and when I'm involved with others' weddings, I'm always grateful we did what we did, especially when they start arguing about what style of napkin rings to use. :) But I think a housewarming party would be a great catchall for you guys!

Date: 2006-08-08 11:08 am (UTC)My hair is so thick that the only way I can pull off that sort of haircut is to have half of my hair shaved off. Honestly, it's like a mohawk. I'll have to show you sometime! (There is no hair on the sides or the back, just the top and it falls down to cover the rest.)
