Last night when I was feeling really crappy, I thought maybe the problem was that I'd had too much crap food. I've really been working hard to make better food choices, but there are some days/times when I find myself falling into bad food patterns. The worst is probably weekends - meals at non-standard times, more eating out (higher fat foods), and heavier on the carbs. But I also have a heck of a time on those nights when My Jennifer is working late and I'm on my own for food, because I don't usually feel like cooking a big meal and resort to quick foods.

Since on Sunday my diet consisted of cranberry pancakes with lots of syrup (yummm) and sausages at breakfast with Joe, and then macaroni and cheese and a slice of cheesecake at IKEA, I had to step it up tonight even though Jen is at work and I was on my own for dinner. But I got home from work late and was /hungry/. I had a light lunch (a Trader Joe's frozen bean burrito and a little cup of unsweetened applesauce) and it didn't exactly hold me through a long day.

I ended up having some sliced fresh tomatoes to take the edge off, and then I boiled a tofu dog (with whole wheat bun) and an ear of corn that was going to go bad if it didn't get cooked ASAP. I topped it off with two clementines and a glass of crystal light lemonade. I rule. And dang, those tomatoes were good. I'll have to bring some for lunch tomorrow.

Tomorrow's lunch will be more challenging, as I will be eating it in 15 minutes in the car. I'm guessing pb&j for starters and then whatever other finger foods I can come up with - tomatoes and a cheese stick maybe? Lunch in the car is such a PITA.

Sometimes I find it so hard to believe that I /like/ to eat junk when I feel so much better when I don't. What is wrong with me?

Mmmm, I love pb&j!

I do too. Too bad peanut butter (and probably peanuts in general) doesn't agree with my innerds. Odd too. I used ot eat it 5 days a week for years.

Bummer. I would be so sad if I had to avoid peanut butter!

I feel the same way. I feel SO MUCH BETTER when I've exercised. And yet I am having a hard time making my ass go. Which is stupid. It's utterly stupid.

We're not stupid, we're just dorks!

Enh, you can be a dork, but I just feel like a dork that makes dumb choices.

I wouldn't go that far. You're awfully hard on yourself.

Well, yes, but it's a trait many of us share.

But I don't LIKE it when you do it, because you are GREAT!

i was just reminding myself today how much better i feel when i'm in control of my eating and making good choices. this was after a cookie and a peice of pizza (that was after yogurt and a nectarine).

Dang, I love pizza! I could eat pizza every day, I think. (Also cookies.)

I think the crap food would be a little better if I didn't tend to eat crap on the same days that I don't eat at regular times. As much as I'd love to have 7-day weekends all the time, the rigorous schedule of work means I get my three meals in with adequate space in between.

Let's have pizza!

i looooove pizza too. oh man how i love it.

there is just no need for me to eat it when i've eaten my lunch already, or when i DO eat it for a meal, i eat way too much.

I used to majorly overeat pizza, so I created a solution. I always order a salad from the pizza place, and I eat the salad first. Usually I'm only hungry for one piece of pizza after that. :)

(Yeah, but then I have a lot of leftover pizza that I overeat later. *grin*)

Those were awesome food choices. Now that my little bro has stopped visiting me, I plan on getting back in to the cooking, eating better thing too. Just think of this way...how nice is it to come home from a long day of work to find dinner already made? Even if it is cold, it's a microwave away from delicious. PLUS...you have lunches for the next day. maybe that would take the suckiness of cooking for one off

Yeah, sometimes when I get out of work early (or even at a normal time) I will go crazy with the cooking and make a big pot of chili or whatever. And you're right, it IS nice to have dinner ready or lunch the next day!

I got home late tonight, though, and by the time I got home it was almost 7. The thought of preparing a large meal was just enough to send me over the edge. Hey, at least I'm not eating chips and salsa for dinner anymore! (I've done that in the past.)

Oooh, I'm your source for healthy lunch-in-the-car food ideas!

Things I eat and also make for Rose that are easy (I am on a special food plan so I always balance the meal with protein/starch/veggie/fruit/fat)

- Carrot sticks
- Cut-up pepper strips
- cut up jicama strips
- Apple slices
- Almonds, peanuts, soynuts (all high protein nuts)
- Hummus on bread or tortilla
- grapes
- grape/cherry tomatoes
- chunks of cheese/string cheese
- salad dressing (I dip veggies when I'm at a red light, haha)
- strawberries
- raisins
- Peanut butter smeared on whatever
- smoothies that I make ahead of time (my favorite is a cup of milk, a frozen banana, a couple of TBS of peanut or almond butter, and a dash of cinnamon. I swear it's like ice cream, to me anyways but I don't eat sugar anymore so what do I know, haha!)

Ooh, good call on the nuts. I have a bag of peanuts/almonds that I whip out for occasions like this. (It's been a while since I had to eat in the car. I'm trying NOT to do that.)

We're low on fresh produce right now but I have some to work with (clementines - maybe I can pre-peel; grapes; carrots; tomatoes). I /should/ actually pack my lunch tonight since I have to be up early to get an ultrasound tomorrow before work... but I know me and I know I won't.

You are way more coordinated than I am. I could never dip my veggies at a red light! (When I take veggies in the car, I just eat them plain.) Peanut butter and... is a staple for me when I'm in the car. :) I drive on bumpy, potholey Boston streets and if I had a salad dressing cup FORGET IT. :)

Hummus/pita/veggies is my lunch plan for Wednesday so I think I'll stick to the pb&j, cheese stick, nuts, veggie. I have 15 minutes to eat - let's see if I can get past the sandwich! Ha ha.

p.s. That smoothie sounds awesome. Too bad I don't have a thermos. I should invest. I would end up replacing the banana with something else though, because I eat my daily banana in the morning in my bowl of cheerios. (I'm kind of weird about breakfast.)

Thanks for the suggestions!

Rose is weird about breafast too. She has eaten the same breakfast 6 days a week, for like 2 years. We buy her cereal by the case, I shit you not (organic cherrio-type things).

I try not to eat in the car either. Sometimes I end up eating my snack in there though. The pregnancy has made it so that I just can't wait when I'm hungry or I get sick very quickly.

Hehe, I'm so coordinated because I used to be a fast-food junkie. I *constantly* binged in my car. Sad but true. I'm a 12-step program for food now, hence the uber-coordinated healthy meals and no sugar or flour. I put the veggie dip in the cupholder, btw, which is how I manage not to spill. ;o)

I do orange slices too btw, but i just cut them up with the peel still on and then eat them that way (make sense)? Kind of easier in the car.

Yeah, I am just like Rose. I get into a major cereal rut... but my ruts have changed. I went through a big "frosted shredded wheat" kick before I limited sugar. Then I went through a hardcore raisin bran phase. I still LOVE raisin bran but I have a hard time finding one that doesn't coat the raisins with sugar. Now I've moved on to cheerio type things and I am totally hooked. I could seriously eat cheerios with fruit twice a day!

I can totally see eating a snack in the car, I just hate having to eat whole meals there. I really try to schedule time for a lunch break in my day but sometimes it is unavoidable. Yuck, I hate that.

I have another friend who 12steps for food. She gave up fat and sugar, too, and she is doing AWESOME at it. I could never do it. I just know I couldn't.

I never thought I could give up sugar either (I don't know how your friend gave up fat - it's an essential part of any diet, so to be honest that sounds really, really unhealthy. I don't eat friend food but I get very decent amounts of fat in my food plan).

Whenever people say "I could never do it" my part answer is "hopefully you could if your life depended on it." Cheesy, but true. But fuck no, I would never be that restrictive except that flour and sugar are seriously crack to my brain.

When I say "fat," I meant "greasy, fried foods" and things like that, not all fat. My bad, I totally misspoke.

And yes, I suppose I could shake it entirely if my life depended on it. I have dramatically cut down on sugar/refined carbs and it has been a serious process. I'm fine as long as the temptations aren't right in front of me... we don't buy stuff like that at home, but we have junk at work ALL THE TIME. I am so weak!
