The joys of homeownership = $$
Nov. 27th, 2006 08:35 amOh my god, I don't know if I've ever willingly lived in such a pit in all of my life. We can't even really do much in the way of unpacking until we get all of the furniture together so we have somewhere to PUT it all. Argh! I suppose I need to start on some of the hanging clothes, at least, just to get some of the boxes out of the way. Or maybe the kitchen. But I have no idea where we're planning to put stuff, except on this new big table thing we bought for the kitchen that will probably be a lifesaver in terms of storing pots and pans.
We drove down to New Haven (gah, what a pit) to spend far too much money at IKEA. I mean, the amount scares me a little bit. But not too much to not peek at baby furniture for, you know, sometime. But I've never spent 4digits at a store before. We managed to score a couch, a coffee table, that thing for the kitchen, and an entire bedroom set, among other things. Now we just have to put all the frickin' things together. After they are delivered, of course. (We had to deliver the couch, and then we learned that it is the same price for up to 15 items, so umm, yeah, we told them to pretty much take all of it.)
It's kind of fun living out in the country but I really need to get cracking with the job search. I probably should wait until we have real, reliable internet (no offense, Jim) but I need to get on that ASAP. Being a grownup is HARD!
I know most of you are all back at work today, so I will think of you while I lounge around the house. In my mess of boxes and piles and disaster.
p.s. Is everyone getting LJ comments e-mailed to them? Is it just me who is not?

Date: 2006-11-27 06:38 pm (UTC)working backwards..
Date: 2006-11-27 02:04 pm (UTC)being a grown up IS hard, especially when you have to do things like look for a job when all you want to do is lie around and sleep. do you have any idea of what's out in that area as far as social work jobs? do you want to do children's services or just about anything?
how much 'in the country' are you?
we bought simon's crib (now greta's) at ikea. love it. not only was it CHEAP, it's very spare-looking and not overdone, like most cribs are. i love their baby stuff!
i haaaaaaate the part of moving that includes living out of boxes. if i lived by you i would come and organize your kitchen. i rock at organizing kitchens. heck, i'd spend all day helping you unpack. oh well. :) try to get the clothes hung today. one thing at a time and you will feel so much better. is the house pretty clean otherwise? i mean, did the previous owners leave it clean for you guys?
Re: working backwards..
Date: 2006-11-27 06:43 pm (UTC)As for social work jobs, I don't really know. There isn't a heck of a lot in the paper right now (well, the paper online). I am thinking of just sending my resume to a couple of the big social service agencies to start - and I will hear about that temp Office Manager job at UMass sometime this week, I think. I am also considering doing the temp agency thing since I will be stopping working again for a while in the summer.
I am a big fan of IKEA for the CHEAP. And yes, their cribs are spartan and wonderful and I love them.
I hung some clothes today from the wardrobe boxes, and more importantly, I put the laundry hampers in the closet and dumped the laundry in them instead of in piles on the bedroom floor. I feel loads better already, at least in the bedroom. And yeah, the house itself is fairly clean. I wiped the cabinet shelves and Jen cleaned the fridge and I cleaned the front of the stove... so that's SOMETHING.

Date: 2006-11-27 06:53 pm (UTC)i love the cheap of ikea! and a lot of the design, as well. it's a good thing you can find cheap cribs b/c you will need TWO!!!!!
yay! keep up the good work! after a nap, that is.

Date: 2006-11-27 08:46 pm (UTC)i couldn't co-sleep. i kept waking up and it sucked too badly. having the baby right next to the bed was easier for me. then i did the crib. but i'm a sucky sleeper.
anyways, you CAN'T come sleep in my bed b/c the babies will need you, silly. :D

Date: 2006-11-28 07:59 am (UTC)I determined a long time ago that the LJ people just can't program their way out of a paper bag. This doesn't surprise me.

Date: 2006-11-27 03:17 pm (UTC)And then after that, I realize that 'hey, this is MY house and I can put stuff wherever the hell I want and paint whatever color I want and it rocks.' Someday, my dear pregnant and exhausted friend, you'll look back and go "wow, I love being a homeowner." Until then, take a lot of naps. That's how I deal.

Date: 2006-11-27 03:45 pm (UTC)When will you have another check on the babies? How many weeks along are you now & what is your due date? Will you find out the sexes?

Date: 2006-11-27 08:31 pm (UTC)My next prenatal appt (first one with midwife!) is on 12-12. I called today to tell them I was having twins to make sure they don't want to see me sooner, and they don't (drat!) but did call in a prescription for additional folic acid. Great, more pills.
We'll be 9w on Wednesday but at all of my u/s I was measuring a little behind. Our official due date is 4th of July but my RE says I should be ready for kids by mid-June. And yes, we will find out the sexes.

Date: 2006-11-27 04:33 pm (UTC)Anyway, I wanted to say ... I've never spent four digits buying stuff either! What a way to think about it...Not even our bed cost that much (I don't think -- I think it was still under a grand).
Looking forward to pictures (hint hint)

Date: 2006-11-27 08:34 pm (UTC)Yeah, I've never bought one thing that cost so much (except for a house and a car) - even when we ordered sperm I think we kept it under $1000 at a time. (Though maybe not.) At least for the amount of money we spent we got about 9 pieces of furniture and a really neat shelving system!
When I find and unpack my camera, and my own internet gets installed, and some of the boxes go away, I will post pictures, I promise!

Date: 2006-11-27 08:36 pm (UTC)My next appointment is 12-12 - first one with a midwife instead of a fertility doc! YAY! I called today to see if I should be doing anything differently with twins and they called in a prescription for more folic acid.
No pictures of the house yet - it is a disaster and I can't find the camera!
