We decided to hire a painter to fix the bedroom because it's pretty cheap right now to get folks like painters and it's better to have someone who can come tomorrow or Friday than to try to get it done on the weekend. We had a dude come yesterday to give an estimate and he said he thought he could get it done in 4 hours, so hey, that's pretty cheap!

One thing he recommended was Benjamin Moore Paint which he said was a better quality than the paint we had. He told me where to go get it, so today I trekked into Florence to get this Benjamin Moore paint. I found the closest color match to the color we had and asked for a gallon and a quart, just like I was told.

Holy crap, the gallon was over $40!! I nearly pooped my pants. The gallon and the quart cost $60 together. Which is more than the last two gallons of our cheaper paint. This paint had BETTER work.

we use nothing but benjamin moore paint. we've tried others in the past, and learned from our mistakes. it's fantastic stuff and so nice to paint with.

when we did the upstairs, we went through 18 gallons of BM paint. that's alotta cash!

oh! even in our red bedroom it only took 2 coats (with a grey primer). almost any other brand you'll need at least 3 to get good coverage.

Well, if you need 33% less paint, but it costs---

Ah, fudge it. I'm not up for the math to figure out which is a better deal.

it's still expensive. :) and really, it's only helpful on the red, since you still need 2 coats for every other color, no matter what kind of paint you buy.

Feh! (Insert dismissive Dilbert wave here)

That's it. I'm planting berry bushes in the yard, and using their crushed juice to paint the living room!

HA! Take THAT big Paint Industry!

That I'd like to see.

Yeah, red is tough to cover. We actually have one spot that will not cover completely, but we will probably put a picture there or something. Shh, don't tell.

Wow, 18 gallons, that's major ch-ching!!!

Benjamin Moore really is excellent paint. I purchased Sherwin Williams for the living room, and it took the painters 4+ coats to get it to look halfway decent, and it's STILL streaky in certain light. Grr!

Behr Paint (from Home Depot) also does a decent job in two coats, but I still think a third coat is best.

See, we started with Behr paint. And maybe it's because it was red, but it covered like crap. The painters told us that Behr paint used to be better but now that it's mass marketed at HD it is kind of crappy.

We have two gallons of another color of Behr, but I'm hoping since it's blue and going over a different shade of blue it will be better. We'll see.

Last week I bought a gallon of benjamin moore paint and was also astounded at the price! However - SO WORTH IT as you only need one coat. Even though I was painting over a DAY GLO lavendar (that's right) with a light color, and the hideous first color was HIGH GLOSS, I still only needed one coat. Oh, and I was using a brush, not a roller.

So, see? Totally worth it. I bet in the long run, it may even SAVE you money.

we've always done 2 coats, but we're sort of anal about painting.

but doesn't the ben moore make painting more fun, because it's just SO NICE to paint with?

i say yes.

i'm remembering now that we used exterior paint (outside door). taht may make a difference. because on the door that troy did two coats on? no different from the one coat door. he's very anal about painting, as well. crazy!

Yeah, our room looks beautiful now so I am pleased even though I had sticker shock. It was definitely worth it and our room is awesome!

I used Benjamin Moore at my last place - and it's true. It's awesome paint. It's *damn* expensive, and I cursed the stuff out the entire time I was rolling it on, but once it was done, I was happy as a clam.

Yeah, I really love the way our bedroom looks. Once we have furniture in there I will take photos!

I used the Behr paint from Home Depot in my kitchen, my stairway, my bay window and in Ella's room. I've only ever done 1 coat and I love it. The green in the kitchen probably could have used one more coat, but it still looks great.

Cheap paint will come back and bite you in the ass every time. The expensive stuff, if you're planning on leaving it for a good long while, is worth every single penny.

See, we started with Behr paint and it totally didn't work. I hope it's just because it was red (and red is tough to paint) because we have two gallons of a blue-grey (Behr) that I hope isn't a total waste. It's for our dining room.

I've been told that the Behr isn't as good any more now that it is mass marketed by Home Depot. I don't have a lot of painting experience, though, so I don't know.
