I spent the day being a normal member of society. Jess ([livejournal.com profile] hope_persists) picked me up and ran a ton of errands with me. We went to UMASS so I could initial some paper for my new job, and then she took me to lunch at Judie's which was YOM YOM, and then we hit some stores. Then we went on The Great Cat Food Debacle 2006.

My big cat Daedalus eats Hill's Prescription Diet c/d because he at one time had crystals in his urine (FLUTD) that made him pee blood and it was very sad. So we buy this food that costs a million dollars and life has been fine for nearly eight years. Well, we're out of food. So I go to a vet. They tell me they will not sell it to me "without a prescription." So we go to Jessica's vet. They say the same thing. Mind you, we are OUT of cat food. And Daedalus hasn't seen a vet since I lived in Ohio.

So finally Vet #2 gives me the number of a vet that "might be lax" and tells me to try there. And the nice lesbian lets me buy a 4lb bag of c/d without a prescription. Yeah! Daedalus can eat tonight. (Otherwise he would eat me.)

I called a vet in Easthampton and was asking them about the prescription policy and they told me I could just bring in my old vet records instead of needing a prescription faxed. So I can get a bigger bag of cat food tomorrow, which is good because we try to buy 20lb. at a time. (This stuff's expensive, so any little discount helps. Plus, all the cats eat it.)

It's just so silly, this prescription business. My cat food isn't harmful to unaffected cats (ask Ralph, who's been eating it for 7+ years) and really, would I pay $40/bag if I didn't have to and could buy cheaper stuff at the store? Do people try to sell this stuff on the black market? I don't get it!

Big love to Jessica for taking me to 3 vets and listening to my whining.

~//~

So far I've only had some spotting today (some brown, some pink). Of course I'm paranoid that I did too much today but I'm laying pretty low tomorrow (except for the cat food run, I think) and really, all we can do is see what happens. I know that I can not cause, nor prevent, a miscarriage.

Tonight is dinner with [livejournal.com profile] vorpalbla's parents. They are nice people and it is nice that they are making us dinner. But I've only met them once (when Jeff and I got laid off from the shelter) and Jen has never met them, so it should be interesting!

Ok, that's just crazy - I think those vets are just trying to bilk you for an office visit.

I'm sure this is what the deal is. My cat is on c/d diet too and it's expensive and a pain in the ass to go to our vet every time we run out. I take him in for his yearly appointment like clockwork because I'm sure they'll shut me off if I don't. Bastids.

It's frickin' ANIMAL FOOD, not percocet! How the heck do you need a prescription for cat food????

From: [identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com
If you are ever in Dot, Neponset Animal Hospital on Morrissey will just sell it to anyone. You can buy a huge 20lb bag by just walking in off the street. They agree that no one would drop the $$ if they didn't have to.

TOTALLY. Although they did say they would sell it to me "if my vet would fax them a prescription." And my last vet was totally shady and would just sell it to you off the rack so it's not like they could "write a prescription" for a cat they never saw!

Plus, since when did CAT FOOD become a controlled substance?

Hmm...my friends having dinner with my parents while I'm not there.
Nothing wrong with it by any means, but I must say it's a first!
I wish your dad was alive, so I could go track him down and eat dinner at his house.
Watch out for Daedalus. I hear it's not good to be eaten by a cat during pregnancy.

Especially a giant one!

I once had my toes nibbled by a small cat. It was very weird. I still wonder what that cat was thinking about my toes.

I have never been nibbled by a cat, but D definitely starts STARING at me when he gets hungry.

However, Jen's parents' dog likes to lick my feet and it is the most disgusting thing ever.

I asked your parents if they thought you were nervous that we would sit around talking about you, and they just looked at me blankly and said, "Why?" It was cute.

Well, dude, let me tell you - if you had ever gone out to dinner with my dad, it would have been /interesting/. (He would not cook for you. That is not a BAD thing.) Maybe he would have started with the racist jokes... or maybe just talk about Jews for a while. You know, "just for fun."

Keep in mind that the FIRST time he met Jen, in the middle of a Chinese restaurant, they were chatting about her watch and she was talking about how much the store (Montblanc) sells it for and he said, "Wow, they really bent you over the counter and made you beg for it, didn't they?"

Aaah, dad.

I'm wondering if that metaphor was any less cringe-inducing when used toward your lesbian girlfriend, than it would have been if he'd said it to his son's straight girlfriend. While the latter might add some additional creepiness, I'm leaning toward no.

Was your dad one of those "Jews control finance and the media" guys? You know, I'm always wondering if there really IS a big old worldwide Zionist conspiracy and I'm the one uncool Jew that isn't in on it.

From: [identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com
Oh, let me tell you, it was just as cringe-worthy when he said it to Jen. Not to mention the rest of the Chinese restaurant. ;)

My dad wasn't any sort of "Jewish conspiracy" dude... more like he had a little, erm, obsession with WWII. Now if there IS a Jew conspiracy and you're left out, you could always blame it on your agnosticism. I mean, maybe they talk about it in temple and you're missing it. :)

No, quite seriously there is a good reason for saying that.
After all, as a grown-up no one ever presses you as to whether you actively disbelieve in Santa Claus, or are merely unsure as to his existence.

i use the same food for my cat,and it sure is outragous what a large bag of that stuff costs. i used to use the soft version as well( by the case), but decided to ween the kitty off the soft and just use the dry.
her poo smells better without the soft :P

its total bullshit that you need a script to buy it. no-one in their right mind would willingly drop $50/bag on cat food if it wasnt required.

From: [identity profile] judecorp.livejournal.com
Yeah, I think my ex wanted to feed them wet food too, and also bought a case once, and I put the smackdown on that. (Well, and wet food turns them into crack fiends.)

no-one in their right mind would willingly drop $50/bag on cat food if it wasnt required.
See, this is what I said to the vet yesterday. It is ridiculous!

I know what you mean about the cat food. One of our cats needs a science diet RX food for a previous crystal and now fiber problem. I tried buying it at their former vets once just because I was in Noho and it was convenient. And even though they had once prescribed it to him, they would not sell it to me because they had not seen in two years (we really didn't like them so we switched vets). I had to drive way out of my way to the vet they go to just to get the damn food. For real, would we really pay so much money for the food if we didn't think they needed it?!

Glad you had a good day and got out.

So frustrating! Thank goodness I found SOMEONE who would sell me some yesterday! It is just crazy.

I need to find a vet, but I will probably just go down the street to the people in Easthampton that seemed very nice to me on the phone and said they would make do with just me dropping off some old records to prove that we'd bought it before. Now I just need to find the records. (Whoops.)

don't kill me for saying this, but that script food is totally a rip off. i used to work for the eukanuba company/pet food store and there are tons of other foods (NOT just Iams/Eukanuba) that will do the same thing. and actually, Hill's is a corn-based food, therefore cats usually become obese and eat MORe of it because they are not getting the proper nutrition because of the high corn content and thus you go through much more food. plus, they poo poo more because the corn is non-digestible.

you could totally get away with buying another premium food that will do the same thing, and you willa ctually use less. :)

i heart me some bigass dadelus though.

me: Jude has a really big cat, Marc.
marc: oh i bet.....(rolling his eyes and blowing me off)
me: see? look how big he is (walkinginto apartment)
marc: holy shit. that is one big kitty.

You know, I totally used to feel the same way (about the cat food being a sham). I looked all over the internet and actually found the recipes for the different kinds of low-mineral cat food because it was so ridiculously high-calorie that I wanted to try to make something myself. Oddly enough, the c/d was the LOWEST calorie of all of the low-mineral cat foods!

I am skeptical that regular Iams/Eukanuba would be okay for The Big D because when he started having all of his problems, we only fed him Iams dry cat food. When we switched to c/d dry, he never had another episode.

It's true. Cat food buying is serious business.

Of course, I went to a local vet and they sold me 20lbs as long as I promised to get my cat a check up in January. Which he needs anyway. SOLD!

Our cat has the female version of that food -- vet prescribed. The totally prefer the dry food to the wet food. It IS a pain in the ass...I'll remember to keep those records with us if we ever move.

Judie's is my all time, favorite all-around place to eat. I always get the soup/salad combo with a popover. The popovers are incredible, and I could probably live off of them alone, if provided the opportunity.

Mind if I add you?

I love healthy food that is delicious. It's one of the things I love about the Valley that was sincerely lacking in the Midwest. (Now, the Midwest had a lot of delicious food... I just don't know how healthy it was.)

Popovers aren't really my thing because I'm not a big BREAD person. Maybe a bite or two with some delicious apple butter. But the soups! The salads! YOMMMM.

And, of course! Any friend of Jen's is a friend of mine. Besides, I started stalking you first. ;) xo
