Flooding

Water is still coming in. There is a bunch of flooding all over the area (southern NH, western MA, northwestern CT) and most of the rivers in my county flooded. I guess it is inevitable, then, and perhaps not entirely the fault of our foundation.

Jen tried some of that basement seal stuff and we have been wet-vac fiends. The water, however, continues to seep. I have heard that the river is expected to be below flood levels soon (if not already) but who knows how long it will take for the water table to recover. I guess we'll eat some dinner and check on it again before bed, and then expect a disaster in the morning. At least we have everything that can be lifted elevated at least a foot now. I am very scared that we will wake up to several feet of water in the morning.

I told Jen to bring the litter boxes upstairs (yuck) and we'll have to bring the cat food up as well. Poor little guys!

Gosh, I hope this is kind of a freak thing and not something that a) will compromise our foundation (which is usually very good in rainy weather) or b) begin a yucky, wet trend.

Sigh.

Where's the water coming in?

Do you remember that stupid poorly made stud wall into the corner? Yeah well that's now in pieces. It is coming in the corner on the floor right where those studs met. The drylock just washed away - it sucks.

I'm guessing your house doesn't have a sump pump? What a major pain in the ass. Flooding sucks big time. You might check your insurance policy and see if it covers this.

Yeah, we were talking about this. I know that when our house was inspected and when we switched our insurance from the renter's policy to this policy, they said we didn't need a separate flood rider (since we don't live near an ocean or major waterway or anything). I don't know if that means we're not covered at all in terms of water, or what. I need to dig out our policy and really scour it.

If things keep going the way they're going (and not take a turn for the worse), we should be fine in terms of damaged goods. The /only/ thing I'm really worried about is if the water actually gets high enough to cover the whole floor and therefore get the furnace, washer, and dryer. So far, these parts of the basement haven't been touched by water.

The water is still trickling in but I am hoping for the best.

But no, we don't have a sump pump. We've never so much as had a speck of water before.

Major suckage. Sorry. :( Hopefully this is a "once every ten or twenty years" type storm like they are saying on the news.

I hope so, too! I didn't even think we had that much water around here!!

Yuck. I am so sorry to hear that -- you both really need a break.

I agree. I don't know that anyone in charge of that sort of thing is listening, though.

You could use one, too.

Our basement seeps too....it really sucks. I've just been wracking my brain lately on trying to figure out a way to make it dry without having to pay 10K. BUT, I don't think you will have that problem...I mean, it's not everywhere and you caught it before it has a chance to molder and ...

Anyway. clean it up the best you can and start the dehumidifier when it's safe to do so. I think if I knew at the time that our place seeped, I don't think we would have gotten it. But there was no way to tell.

I am hoping you're right. I hope this is a freak thing brought on by flooding and that it isn't something that is now going to be a seeping problem from now on. We're going to get some basement sealer stuff and try just putting it all in that corner and down the adjoining walls and hope that we don't get flooded again any time soon. (Maybe we'll see again next spring?) I'm sorry you're dealing with a seeping basement also. Sucks.

Our basement doesn't have any evidence of previous seepage so I don't know. I know we really asked the home inspector to check it out and he said it looked dry, so I am keeping my fingers crossed.

The cats really want to go back to the basement. I really want my house to stop smelling like mud.
