Hey - I wanted to thank all of you that suggested I ask my midwife for pediatrician recommendations. I /do/ have a list of pediatrician recommendations from my midwife... but my midwives' office is 45 minutes north of our place (we chose them based on recommendation and because they deliver in the place I want to deliver, hence willingly making the trip) and all of the recommendations are up in that area or further north. Nothing in our area.

I tried asking our birth class instructor (who IS in the area), and she said, "We'll address this at one of our next classes." Our last class is June 19th and that's a little close for comfort for me.

Did you tell her that that's a bit too close for comfort for you? Because you'd think she'd be understanding.

Well, I did e-mail her a couple of weeks ago. But MY priorities are hardly HER priorities. :)

Well, you're her client, and she has a responsibility to answer your questions if she can. And if she wants you to recommend her positively towards other people, she should be doing what she can to help you out. It's not like that requires much effort on her part.

I mean, I paid her to be in her birth class, but she doesn't exactly "work for me." She's our birth class instructor and there are like 14 of us in the class.

If it was the midwife or the doula I would say yes, absolutely... but this woman's responsibility to me is really to teach the birthing class. That's what we paid for.

Whatever dude. It's just good business that if she knows how to help, she should.

Dr. Kenny in Northampton (or Florence, depending what map you look at).
I went to him (and the other docs that used to be there), my brother did. My mom worked there. I got a job there when I was 16 as my first "real" job. My cousin who has 2 babies and lives in E'ton takes both to him and she ADORES him, and she's the fussiest person I know. I also went to high school with one of his daughters. Bottom line is that he's a super nice guy and a good doctor.

Is that an ok recommendation?

I worked at that practice when I was living in Northampton and everyone who worked there was pretty awesome. You should definitely look into them!

Depends how cool they are with the vaccine stuff. I am going to call them!

You know, I think he must be EVERYONE'S pediatrician - at least everyone in their 20s and 30s... because one of Jen's coworkers said he was her pediatrician, too. :)

Jen is more comfortable with female doctors so I don't think Dr. Kenny will work for us, but a lot of the Northampton Area Peds are on our insurance and I am trying to schedule a visit with them. (A lot of their docs are full right now.)

It all depends how cool they are with delayed vaccination schedules. They have the "APA Standard" vaccine schedule right on their webpage so I'm not sure if that will be well received.

I had an ancient male pediatrician when I was a kid. What is it about pediatricians that are all old, nice men?

Thanks for the rec.

I don't know if it helps Jen, but my cousin's two babies are both girls, and she used to prefer female doctors. Personally I do too, but he's a super nice guy... definitely the exception to the rule. When I was a kid I'd see him or Dr Bartlett (female) but I'm not sure if she's still there or not. Dr Kenny founded the practice. It used to be just 3 doctors back then, and they weren't old, they were all my parents age. :)

Well, think about how old your parents are now! :)

Seriously, though, I am going to give that practice a call today. Lots of people have really positive things to say about Dr. Kenny and the others. Thanks!

you could try calling midwifery care of holyoke and asking them. they have satellite offices in Noho and Easthampton, so they may know the area beyond holyoke. i know my MW there lives in florence and raised her children there...

I now have a couple of leads which I am trying to follow up on. It's complicated! Did you know that our #1 recommendation is on vacation this week? The whole office is closed! How can they do that to me? :)

What? Don't want to end up in Brattleboro or further north for a pediatrician? ~_^

Yeah, really. That would be great for an emergency. Or a snow storm. :)

I'm not quite qure of your "crunchy quotient," but you could ask at MDC. It's www.mothering.com/discussions (Julia's nursing and I don't feel like doing a hyperlink :P ). Then click on "Finding Your Tribe" and go to CT/MA/RI and post a question asking for recommendations in your area. You'll get them from BTDT moms.

This is how we found our pediatrician. We've been pretty happy with the practice so far.
