Baby's first cold
Oct. 26th, 2007 08:50 pmMy little punk has her first cold! She was so snorty and stuff today, and every so often if she was laying down for a long time, she would cough and sputter on the mucus. It was so pitiful and pathetic and sad. Her little nose was running and she was so crabby and took a lot of naps. I had her nap in the swing a couple of times because it's nice and elevated and seemed to keep her from clogging up. And then we went and got a humidifier for her - been meaning to do that anyway.
Dr. Sears says warm mist vaporizer but I've always been told that warm mist breeds germs and mold. So I got the cool mist. They should technically both work, right? I hate warm mist, it's like sleeping in a sweaty locker room. And I'm paranoid about mold.
Either way, she is blissfully sleeping now and hopefully will be like that for a long time. I hope the humidifier is enough to do the trick, and that she's getting enough breastmilk (even an ounce if that helps) to get SOME antibodies to fight this thing. Last night she didn't sleep well AT ALL, which means I didn't sleep well at all, which is no good. Besides, I hate to see her crabby and miserable.
Poor little peanut.

Date: 2007-10-27 12:58 am (UTC)If you decide to use a humidifier daily, be sure to change out the filter every month. They get mildewy after a while. Also, be sure to use filtered water in it, or all the components get really gross.

Date: 2007-10-27 01:34 am (UTC)So far she is breathing well. But she always does okay with the soft breathing of deep sleep. The true test will be when she starts getting restless (and snorty).

Date: 2007-10-27 01:35 am (UTC)We put distilled water in it today. Would boiled tap water work just as well or does it have to be bottled water? I'd hate to have to buy so much distilled water. (We use it to mix formula also.)

Date: 2007-10-27 01:43 am (UTC)We have a filter on our tap, and our fridge has filtered water in the door. Do you have either? I honestly have no idea if boiled tap would work. I only said that about the water because the first humidifier we had said you could use any water, but after about 2 weeks, it had so much build up of junk that we had to replace it. Of course we have crap for water. Just keep the box and receipt and if you have trouble take it back. :-)

Date: 2007-10-27 02:22 am (UTC)We have a cool mist one and I scrub it out frequently if I have to use it.
Vicks Vapor Rub - best goop ever!!! a little on the chest and a tiny dab on the top of the nose or just under it works WONDERS!! I love the smell of it too so that helps. I've also read and heard from nurses that rubbing it on the feet and covering with socks helps with coughing. You can google that and find more info. It works!
Hope she feels better soon!!

Date: 2007-10-27 12:55 pm (UTC)But I have also heard that about the feet. Supposedly it absorbs into the skin quickly when the feet sweat and the pores open!
We ran the humidifier last night and she didn't wake up once! Yay!!

Date: 2007-10-27 01:05 pm (UTC)I ran the shower really hot before her bath and then ran her bathwater. That way she got the benefit of her relaxing bath and unclogging her nose!
