So I had this beautiful baby who LOVED being swaddled and would drift seamlessly into sleep with that lovely fabric around her. She loved it so much that the other day, Jen and I went and bought three more of the large-size swaddling blankets that we used (Swaddle-Me) because the two we had were getting a little ratty from constant washing.

Last night, this same beautiful baby discovered that she was strong enough and mighty enough to roll over onto her belly while she was tightly and snugly swaddled. (For the record, this is not really supposed to be possible. Theoretically you need your arms to roll over.) The peacefully sleeping baby became an angry baby who was completely face down on her crib mattress with no arms to lift herself up.

Uh oh.

So much for the new swaddles. So much for our seamlessly drifting off into sleep baby.

Hello, quick trip to the store to buy sleep sacks. Hello, beautiful baby who now takes over an hour to fall asleep because she is whipping her arms around everywhere and getting into everything.

Yawn.

with rhett, i'd get him really calm then lie him in his bed. I'd hold his arms down and his feet down until he fell asleep. then slowly remove my hands.

you might also want to try a small stuffed animal for her to cuddle - gives her hands something to do.

Yeah, that's what I've been trying to do. And I think in a couple of days she will kind of get it... but right now, she is asleep in my arms, I put her in bed, and it becomes PARTY TIME. Once the arms go, the legs go, and then she spits up. AWESOME.

I have been giving her a burp cloth (hey, there's always one around!) to hold but she doesn't want to. She wants to hold my hand and nothing else.

OH......... I hated it when Emma would do that. She was a freak of nature and could roll on her tummy in the "Swaddle Me" blankets too. From what I remember it didn't take long for her to chill with the arms and get used to the sleep sacks (maybe a week??).

Gosh, I hope she figures it out soon. Really soon. Taking 2 hours to fall asleep (especially for a 45 minute nap) is maddening.

Somehow the "brown paper packages tied up with string" method probably wouldn't get you many points with the local Family Services folks would it? (yes, I'm joking of course.)

Wonder if one of those pillows that has sloped sides to cradle the kiddo and prevent them from rolling over would work or if she's too old?

I'm not a big fan of those sleep positioners, personally. My fear has always been that a kid can wriggle down them (babies are so wriggly!) and end up with their little face pressed against one of those bumpers. Eek! Especially for us since the head of her crib is elevated because of reflux, so gravity naturally sends her down to the bottom anyway.

She's also probably getting close to being too big for those things, anyway. And knowing her and her temper, she'd be likely to try to roll over anyway and just GET PISSED. :)

Can't you use the sleep care system that keeps them on their back? I have two of them, one that actually elevates them a bit that I plan on using in the cosleeper. We have the Sassy Ultimate Sleep Care System and the Sassy Dual Sleep which is like the same thing without the incline.

Then again, August is just probably growing up. *sniff* so fast!

I actually don't particularly like those. My fear is always that she would wriggle down and then her face would be pressed against one of those side bumpers. We have to keep her bed elevated at the head for reflux, so she wriggles down really easily.

She's just getting too big for that stuff, anyway. She's all over the place these days.

Do you need 6-12 month ones? I can ship you those once Maia grows out of them. It might be a month. I have 1 for sure and another.... somewhere....

I just bought the 6-12 month ones. No sense having to size up in a few weeks!

Thanks, though.

I just wanted to drop you a line and let you know that my vast experience with children in all stages has equipped me to tell you.... uh.... absolutely nothing, because I have none. My thoughts and prayers out to your family for peace and sleep, I know that sleeplessness can totally mess you up! *HUG*

does she like sleeping on her tummy? tate was so much happier sleeping on his tummy, and now i love it because he does that cute baby-with-butt-in-the-air-sleeping thing. :)

No. I wish she did.

She won't do ANYTHING on her tummy except push up on extended arms, get tired, do a face plant, get mad, push up on extended arms, get tired, do a face plant, get mad...

yay for rolling over! It means that now she can sleep on her belly! Hooray!

My kid loved sleeping on her belly with her knees under her and her butt up in the air too.

She HATES sleeping on her belly. She hates doing ANYTHING on her belly but those silly baby push-ups, because she wants to move something FIERCE.

Do you think she will suddenly like sleeping on her belly? I wouldn't mind that at all. Can I do anything to encourage this? Right now, if she rolls over onto her belly in the crib, she SCREAMS.

our twins hated having their arms tied down, but loved to be swaddled so we just use bigger blankets and swaddle the lower half and they have thier arms free...that way if she rolls over she still has her arms yet she is still kind of swaddled... just a sugesstion... don't know if you tried it.

Good luck!

She honestly could care less about the nice comfy snugness of the swaddle (she used to like it when she was younger), it's really just to wrangle her arms so she doesn't wake up the second I put her in the crib.

We're back to swaddling for naps, because otherwise she will. not. nap. Ugh!
